So review time again!!

Today i'll start with a mixed review:

DJ Short's Cultivating exceptional cannabis (an expert breeder shares his secrets)
Attached File  DSCF8208.JPG   164.18KB   1 downloads
I'll start with positive things:
some very useful things are accessible through this book.
1st i'll mention a very super colour diagram of the pot palate/smell. I believe this one is a gem for anyone wanting to up his/her ante in the smell field. (I'll be posting a pic of it soon, as the info in there is really unvaluable...)
He surely takes this very seriously as from my european (and half french, yes ... i know :) ) point of view, this is very comparable to oenology (the wine thinghy...).
And this is definitely a good thing, since it does add many nuances and depth to define a bud's smell and taste!
I should add this diagram is also available in the Big book of buds vol.1.
The 2nd very positive thing is an article about heritage strains, an article that can be found also here !

Next will come the , let's say..., less positive things in this book.
1st the pricing at 16.95$ makes it cheaper than the BIG grow books i reviewed earlier... But, and that's a big BUT... it's only 102 pages of black and white text and drawings with only a small colour section in the middle of the book.
2nd the content.
Well you obviously cant fit as much info in a 100 pages book as in a 500+ pages one.
So i'll be nice and mention it goes through the growing section just barely brushing over each section...
I mean he mentions everything from propagation to air circulation and ripeness for example.
But none of those subjects are treated as deeply as they need to be (imo that is).

So as i said at the start a mixed review to say the least.
Looking back i wished i had seen a copy before the buy; because i think i wouldn t have bought it!
As honestly you'd be hard pressed to cultivate exceptional cannabis with just this book as a reference.
So here it does not do what it says on the tin!

Another grow book for today:

Jorge Cervantes's Marijuana outdoors guerilla growing.
Attached File  DSCF8210.JPG   156.35KB   0 downloads

This one is in a league of its own, taking into account only the guerilla growing side of things!
Lots of security talk, and that's a good thing since as guerilla grower, you really don't want to get busted or see your crop stolen or taken by the pigs!!!
But most of it is just common sense, but i know a lot of stoners who could use a bit of that, so, it's not a bad thing either

The book is divided in 4 main sections, each covering a different set of climatic circumstances.

I believe there might be others climates to see to; but the main western world climates are seen to.
Section 1 being about cool rainy coastal climate (NW USA, BC, Canada, coastal Europe).
Section 2 about warm arid coastal climate (Australia, California, Spain, Italy...).
Section 3 about hot cold humid interior climate (Midwest USA, inland Europe)
And section 4 about cool mountain and prairie climate (Rocky mountains, plains, Switzerland...)

There's also a good appendix section containing lots of pertinent info about fertilizing, and a very useful both ways converting table (to and from) metric.

Also worth mentioning imo, this book is also available in German and in Spanish.

At a price of 14.95$ its 150+ pages have only 2 pages worth of advertisement, but they are for the publisher's book; so it's not really ad in the sense we mean in canna books!

So a pretty positive review for this one.

Ok...

This one will be a rave review!!!
So that you know what to expect from the following..... :)

This one is about a serie of porn books i revere a lot :

Jason King's Cannabible.

This one is valid for the 3 (until now, but who knows...) books in the serie.
Attached File  DSCF8201.JPG   118.64KB   0 downloads Attached File  DSCF8202.JPG   123.82KB   0 downloads Attached File  DSCF8203.JPG   118.23KB   0 downloads
I have the chance of owning the Deluxe edition with a stunning hardcover for housing the 3 books.
The picture on the cover is astonishing, showing all 3 book covers depending on the angle of vision, like i used to have as a child but with only 2 images, there are 3 here!
i thought i' show you... :D
Attached File  DSCF8198.JPG   45.14KB   0 downloads Attached File  DSCF8195.JPG   113.08KB   0 downloads Attached File  DSCF8197.JPG   81.88KB   0 downloads Attached File  DSCF8196.JPG   104.73KB   0 downloads

So, here comes the ranting...

I consider this serie as not short of exceptional and let me try to explain why....
I'll start with the printing quality which is at least on the par as the others good books in this domain.
Next the pictures are amazing!
Close-up shots of almost each and every strain described in the 3 books...
Shots of amazing outdoor live plants (imo those are multi pounds plants for most of those showed!!!).
Shots taken through a microscope of some kind, but with a twist... GIGANORMOUS depth of field allowing to see much more than regular microscope shots!!!

Amazing ULTRA PORN in almost all of the pages of each 3 volumes.

Next, a very important thing...
The written part is of the highest quality...
This guy is an auto-called "POT SNOB" of the tallest order!!!!
He gives us a seemingly unbiased opinion on the strains he reviews... Not being afraid of going down hard on those weeds not coming up to his standards!!!
That's a very big difference to the obvious competition which is the Big book of buds serie.
There are also articles about cannabis related things of high quality content.

Here's an anecdote about this serie...
I found those relatively expansive, so i waited for an ebay opportunity to buy a volume of this serie.
I bought the volume 3 for a reasonable amount of $ (i'm a stoner i cant remember how much... :oldhippy: ).

But as soon as i recedived the volume 3 i wanted to own the complete series...
And i soon did.

In my eyes this is really worth every $ of the asking price, if you want to invest in some canna porn books!

I know there's a downsized version (with less pages in each book, and smaller format too) available for a reasonable amount.
But be aware those are not the complete full sized version.

It seems you still can find the books separately... (+-25$ apiece)

Here you are...
I'll post some inside pics soon... I'm sure you'll drool all over; i know i do!!!

Another day, another book review...
By no means am i planning to do this a daily thread, but i find myself having time and will at the same time!!!

So today i'll be starting with:

Ed Rosenthal's Ask Ed: marijuana gold - trash to stash.
Attached File  DSCF8218.JPG   168.26KB   0 downloads

This one book i did put in the misc section, but it could have gone in the plant or even in the cooking book section.
But i felt since there's a bit of both plant knowledge and a bit of cooking recipes and advices, i'll put it in this 3rd category: misc!

It's one of those middle priced (16.95$), pretty low number of pages (175) type of book.
But here it's not per se a bad thing. I mean how long can you talk about a pretty small matter as this one without starting to repeat yourself???
In this case the info in the book is pretty interesting if you are unable for any reason to search the internet, starting at green passion.
Because there's no secrets revealed here; just ways of doing hash, MJpills, cookies, other edibles and tinctures.

Also the book starts with a vaporizers review...
This is nice but impossible to keep updated; so; it is outdated already imo.

So all in all not a bad book by any means and i d even add very interesting as a reference for quick hashmaking from trim and leaves!

But as the future will tell you, there is another gem in my collection that is out of the house at the moment but which is, imo that is, the definitive hash book...

So stay tuned for other book reviews in the future...

And now for the odd bit of porn.....

Let us all welcome:

Albie's good bud guide.
Attached File  DSCF8190.JPG   164.49KB   0 downloads

This one had my opinion about it changed over the last few hours as i strolled in it...
Let me explain...
I got this one soon after the Cannabibles mentioned in an above post...
And this led to me being vastly disappointed with this one...

But, as i went again throught it this morning i changed my point of view...

This is after all a nice book!
I like the fact that each strain has been grown by the author of one of his pals!
I like the alphabetical order!
I like the way each article is built on the same model, with growing tips, vital plant specs (height, stretch, dried weight etc).
So are the pictures with a shot of a live ready to harvest plant on the page across the article concerning it, and then, next double page is dedicated to:
left page: a close up shot of the top cola of the aforementioned soon to be harvested plant, and;
right page: a close shot and a macro shot of a cured bud.
This pleases the eye and gives good info too!!!

There are also articles called 'grow room notes' which are very well written and informative too.

There is a point i'd like to outline though...
The author, in a will to be pression free from breeders or whomever, decided not to mention the breeder(s) of the tested strains...
Depending on how you look at it, it's either a bad or a good thing... I personnally believe it s a bad thing, since knowing who the breeder is might give some people the confidence to go and buy the seeds knowing the author speaks bout those or these... Now they are left wondering where does it come from...

But at the 19.95$ price tag, if you own other porn books, you might consider adding this one...
If not, i'd be hard pressed not to mention the Cannabibles again...
Check them out above and make yourself an opinion...

I'll be posting pics soon...

This is another change in category, as i'll review for the 1st time a cannabis cooking book!!!

Bliss Cameron and Veronica Greene's Marijuana cooking good medicine made easy.
Attached File  DSCF8217.JPG   152.19KB   1 downloads

So this one is again a mixed review...

At 14.95$, this one is in the low-price bracket, but i find this normal too!!!
It's only 60 pages!
Yes they are all in color on glossy paper, but this is relatively a lot of $ for not so much info!

At th start of the book you'll find methods to extract the cannabinoids from the weed and transfer them to fats.
Be it oil or butter, 4 different methods are covered here.

Then comes the meat of any good cookbook: the recipes...

And this is where this book disappoints a lot...
Only 14 recipes are to be found in this book!!!
"Are you kidding??" you might ask. "14 is not a lot, he must have missed a 0 and it's surely 140 right???"
Well ... NO I'm NOT kidding, there are only 14 (fourteen!) recipes in this book!!!!
And they are all sugary preps. If there's no sugar in the recipe it'll be replaced by honey!!!
Except for the tinctures, but in this case it's alcool...
So, if you are diabetic and are looking fror a canna cookbook, maybe this is not exactly the one for you!!!

But on the positive side, the recipes are well explained, with pictures to illustrate.
I tried the chocolate recipe only to find it almost uneatable, the canna taste being extremely strong and not hidden by the chocolate at all!!!
I think my cannabutter is more to incriminate than the recipe here.

As i'm a BIGGGG stoner i ain't tried any other recipe, although 3 or 4 tempt me a lot!!!

So, here you are...

It briefly covers all aspects of environmental control and emphasizes it's importance in the GrowRoom. There are more complete books out there...but FEW as easy to read and understand as this one. It'd be great if you could digitize all these books to make them searchable and available for all.
If you take the pictures (with a camera or a scanner), I would be glad to do the afterwork (OCR, bookmarking, compressing etc)

Writer's opinion about downloading:

[Question] : We find it really hard to get your books here....can people read your stuff on the internet?

[R.C. Clarke] : I can’t do anything about people putting my stuff on the internet and imitation is the highest form of flattery! If they don’t have the money for the info they can have it - the whole idea is education, I think that the only reason that cannabis is not legal is because it has been vilified and education could change peoples minds. It'd be great if you could digitize all these books to make them searchable and available for all.
If you take the pictures (with a camera or a scanner), I would be glad to do the afterwork (OCR, bookmarking, compressing etc)

I think that would be illegal. but I only study cannabis, not copyright laws.

what you're doing may be illegal but if anything the authors and everybody else involved in the book should appreciate what you are doing in helping sales, a few pages out of a book isn't hurting anybody, if anything its making people more interested and making them want to see more pages and possibly going to buy the books! you're not hurting anybody, you're helping everybody by what you've done with this thread! I must thank you again for all that you've posted on here!

Amazing thread, I wish people would do detailed reviews of more products like this; books and guides are often hard to judge when ordering online having a visual reference beyond the cover is invaluable. I have the Cervantes bible and its a great guidebook, but I am so jealous of all the bud porn, that cannabible looks great too. Thanks for the posting, GreenPassion has been a great source of information so far!

Hey PotSnob! What books do you have to review? I'm anxious to see some new books reviewed. I'm a big collecter myself but most of my collection is in Reno with my lovely Ex (if it still exists or is even considered mine anymore)

I'd also love to see anybody elses review on any other books that have already been reviewed just for. Another opinion from a different point of view that could be more similar to mine could be what sells me on the book.

Hola GP, Time to add another book to the GP Vault, I've been meaning to bring up this book here for awhile now but I've taken such a long break from the site it's taken me longer than I thought to catch up on everything.

I know I've mentioned it before but I couldn't find it in this thread?

I was wondering if anybody has checked out "Cannabis Indica" (The Essential Guide to the World's Finest Marijuana Strains)? I picked it up because I turned anti Big Book of Buds as you can tell from my first post in this thread (#18) and after thinking the BBoB was top notch I looked down on the Cannabible series, but after reading zzzzz's review I'll be checking those books out too before too long but for now I want to talk about this book I have here.

It has a nice preface and introduction by Greg Green "Cannabis Indica, What is it Exactly"
as you probably guess the book is a strain guide containing strictly Indica and mostly indica hybrids from many breeders, not just breeders that can afford to buy a page or more in the book. The book is filled with color pictures on every page of some of the most beautiful bud's you've ever seen, but I know that's what we've come to expect from books like this. It could use some features like the buzz smell and other gimmicks like what's in the BBoB but all the info is still in the book and for me it was worth the price and I intend on collecting every volume in this series.

Cover Attached File  Cannabis Indica Cover.JPG   322.82KB   0 downloads Back Cover Attached File  Cannabis Indica Back Cover.JPG   314.23KB   0 downloads

I thought I'd share the page featuring one of GP's favorite breeders Attached File  photo 3.JPG   148.56KB   1 downloads

the info on the strains isn't so much a review, just more detailed information from the breeder than what you'll find on the internet and most of these breeders aren't very well known so you may find some local breeders inside if you're in a legal state. I really enjoyed going through the book and am very much looking forward to the next Volume coming out March 27th according to amazon.com. if you guessed the Title is "Cannabis Sativa" then you're probably just a lucky guesser... If you've had a chance to check this book out, let me know what you thought about it!

Thanks for reading!
