Well here goes I can now grow legally here in california. I had a few bag seeds laying around so i germed them in the paper towel. All 4 popped and three made it to seedling stage. I am going to try DWC and CFL to start indoor here in northern cal. I am able to get the pails in 3 and 5 gal for free from a local resturant. Food grade with lids. They throw them away all the time. In the future i will also start some outside plants in soil and i am wondering if anyone has added Biochar to their gardens soil.. From what i have been reading it seems to be good for plant growth. I am certain i will have lots of questions as i go but i am reading as much as i can to keep them to a minimum.

Sounds good! Starting off hydro is ambitious, make sure you read up on everything. Hydro is far less forgiving than soil is. That being said my biggest tips for DWC are to keep the temperatures down (of the water and the grow area), and also keep light out of the reservoir (cover tops with reflective white plastic, mylar, white foam, whatever). Light and high temps = slime and algae. Good luck!

Thanks Yes i am going to limit light with the application of paint on the outside of the buckets ( white of course). I am now studying up on the different food mixtures for the plants. PH,PPM,TDS and the list goes on. Ran some tomatoe on a ebb and flow system back in the 70,s so i am somewhat familiar with hydroponics just want to start with DWC and mmj.

how much space you got for growing papa? cfl's are good but you will yield much more using a hps lamp if you can handle the heat mucker.

I am going CFL due to the cost right now and my inexperance. I have a large fenced back yard for next summer and have access to the garage for the winter. I will be building a grow room in the garage aprox 8x4 feet.. My retirement starts in April so the cash flow will improve then and i will be looking at HPS for the flowering but i think i might keep the CFL for the veg chamber depending on my learning curve.

papaw, Be sure to wrap those gallon jugs with panda or paint them with a few alternating layers of white and black paint at the least to negate any light. Every jug I've seen allows light though, especially those food grade containers. Best wishes and much luck!

Hi papaw i am new to growing dwc and although it has been a learning experience I really enjoy this method. My two cents would be to buy your ph and ppm guages and check your water continuously. lots of great people to help out on this site. good luck with the grow GreenMarine9

Pawpaw,

I created a grow room in my garage as well. The only major issue I had was with summer temps and had to supplement with an AC unit. I then created a "Vege Kennel" that I made from a large dog crate and that is where I kept my clones and mother plants. It is small enough to get the job done but big enough to allow the moms to thrive to take clones from.

Best of luck and congrats on the retirement!

Hey Papaw I'm sub'd. For what's its worth, I'll help in any way I can. Not a hydro guy, I'm a dirtbagger thru and thru. I get all of my test equipment from http://www.eseasongear.com/ They got the best prices / including shipping that I have found. Good luck and give a shout out if you need anything. -YGF
