A noticeable boost in juice?
Just wondering if one 400w HPS bulb/ballast will create a noticeable increase in power consumption? I always used cfl bulbs, but I purchased a HPS setup and I am itching to use it, just wanting to make sure it ain't gonna raise some eyebrows at the power company and the courthouse.
PS.... I am still gonna use my cfl's for vegging, so that will help some.

wont be that much. to put it in perspective, most desktop PCs use 600w + whatever the monitor uses. its only when you get to 1000w+ running on 12/12 cycles that people might raise an eyebrow

If you are replacing 400 watts of cfl's with 400 watts of HID, there will be no difference ing the bill.

it will cost you around 35.00 to 40.00 dollars or sometimes even 80.00 dollars a month depending on how much your paying per kilowatt hour and the wattage of bulb you have.some times a killawatt hour costs 10 cents some times 11 cents or 12 cents even a lil more depending on how much your electric company charges you can find this out by looking at your electric bill there will be how much you owe on your gas and electricity for the month and how much you pay a hour for both dont mind the gas but on the electric side you should see how much they charge per kilowatt hour this will look something like 12.987652pkh or 10.976644pkh or even upwards to 22.785652pkh the number in front of the point is what your paying like the 12,10,or 22 your either paying 12,10 or 22 cents per killawatt hour.now do some math and mutiply 400 which is the wattage of your bulb by what you pay per killawatt hour. a example would be 400(bulb wattage)x10(what your paying per killawatt hour) so 400x10=4000 thats $40.00 dollars.

I am running a 400W and was concerned in the beginning. My bill raised about 35 dollars and then I started paying more attention to other areas where I could quit wasting. I changed out alot of incandescent bulbs to cfl's and making sure to turn lights off when not in use and even unplugging things like the coffee pot (who needs the clock on that thing). I was doing alot of wasting.
Anyway, I ended up with a lower power bill AFTER I added my 400W than I had before with very little difficulty.
Just some food for thought.

Make sure you use a timer and set it for 18/6. I only noticed about a $40 increase for my 600 watt light.

A light uses 400 watts and is left on 12 hours. How many kWhs are used?
kWh use = (400 watts x 12 hours) / 1000 = 4.8 kWh 30 days x 4.8 =144 KWH used in a month. So if you are paying sixteen cents a KWH .16 x 144 = 23.04 for a month.
