Default What size pot do you flower in?

What size pots/bag do you use to flower? What is the average size of your plants at harvest?

I'm looking at my 5 gal buckets and thinking..Thats ALOT of soil. I know some use 3 gal bags.

Do you use any rules of thumb? ie..1 gallon per ft, or 1 gallon per month.

Knotty,

Great minds think alike! I've been pondering this same question, as I am going back to soil grows and growing much smaller plants than in the past couple grows.

I've used 4 gal pots, and think they are almost too big (especially for smaller plants (I am thinking up to 24" when in flower). So, I'm going to try 3 gal pots and hope they can contain the root system well enough!

BTW, I hate transplanting, so when my babies come from the cloner they go right into the pot they will spend their lives in. Makes it much easier on them and saves me the stress of trying to transplant them later.

Hey ISO,

I knew you did this and told a new grower and it opened a can of worms so to say. Both ways are fine for me and I understand why someone would use your method and the gradual method. If I had they space and lights as you do I would probably do the same thing. Since I'm limited on space and only use a 400 watter I gradually progress with pots as it allows me to keep them huddled under my light.

I might just have to go with 5 gallons due to the fact that i'm pushing 20" and gaining about 2" or so a day and I have to give the plant a few days to get use to the transplant.

Knotty,

I finally got fed up with the issues I was having with the 1000W to veg, and gave it to a buddy this morning.

As of 5 min. ago ther is a shiny new 600W Euro ballast running (at the moment) a Sunmaster 600 conversion lamp. I ordered the GrowBright 600W conversion from HTG this morning, and it will increase the lumen output to 72,000 vs. 50,000 from the Sunmaster.

My "plan" is to veg to 18", then flower. That should keep them managable, and my 4' X 5' veg table won't get overloaded with 8-12 plants on it.

As for the transplant, every time I try to transplant one the soil just falls apart in my hand and I am holding nothing but root! I am sooo careful, but I use a very light soil (40%/40% Ocean Forest-LightWarrior + Perlite and worm castings). By going right from teh cloner to the final "home", it saves me the steps and a lot of stress worrying about it all.

Thanks ISO for replying, at least some one has something to say. I'm about to move up to a 600 watter as soon as I get my taxes done and maybe a grow tent. But until then I gotta make due.

For my first grow, which i just harvested, I transplanted twice. The pot that I finished her in held 1cu foot of soil. It was a big pot, and i got alot of pot from it. That first grow was haphazard and was an experiment. Im growing 3 plants this time and they are in 3 gallon pots for flower. I vegged to 12 inches and them switched to 12-12.

I use two gallon grow bags. They work great for what I need them for.

Since my friends rubbermaid setup isnt even 36" he has to LST his babies. And when limited in space a 2 Liter bottle is alll the room roots will need for a smalll stealth setup. Poke holes in the bottles. Tie down to the bottle itself when LST'ing. Thats my story n im sticking to it... ;)

Low stress training.

By tying the plant down it gives more plant space to absorb more light and to force more plant into a smaller confined area.

Essentially you are training the plant to bend into all sorts of contorsions to suit your need.

Seems like mogie has a diagram if I recall correctly.

I have seen it work well in some situations.

depends on what i'm aiming for - so if my plant if flowers at 1ft height then it could grow 2ft more, so i go with 3 gallons of soil. just by the gallon-per-foot (of plant) rule.

It's said that our plants like about 1 gallon per foot as montioned already, but i have grown plants that were 4' at the end of harvest and were in 3 gallon pots. No problems, i would do it again. I also have had plants just over 2' at the end of harvest in 1 or maybe 1.5 gallon pots. No problems here, i would do it again.

i belief that roots are the true base of the plant - like with our feed, we have to stand on, without a good base of standing we fall over.

and also, the more volume the roots have the better they can perform, sure a little less will not harm em to death but it surely won't do them good either. my point

I hope your not trying to start a debate here. This is the reason i have left some other sites. I was just replying to the original post. "What size pot do you flower in?".

knottyd i'm sorry about that i was reffering to green_nobody. I just found it strange that he had already put in his 2 cents days ago, and then right after i reply and say that i use pots that may be a bit small, he posted agian almost like to defend that rule of 1 gallon per foot. Many people use small pots with excellent results.
