Thanksgiving gluttony....
Just a gentle reminder to be thankful for what we have!

Well..... there you are, watching the football game or just kicking back, pants unbuttoned because you just ate W-A-Y too much. You know, gluttony is a sin. Especially when there are millions of people starving at this very moment. So Granny's going to act as the "Ever-so-High Priestess of the Great Ganja Goddess of Compassion", and assign you your penance!
Your penance is, since you have had more than your share of munchies today, you must provide for the hungry! I want you to go to the site below and play the game. You can do the vocabulary words, or even just the multiplication tables (click "Change Subjects"). But play until you have equaled, in grains of rice, the number of calories you consumed today.
FreeRice
Here's a little help on estimating those calories....
"According to some research, the average Thanksgiving meal is a whopping 3,000 calories. Nibble your way through some leftovers, and you could be consuming more than 4,000 calories in one day!"
http://www.associatedcontent.com/art...ight_gain.html
(Add a couple of slices of Mom's Pecan Pie with whipped cream and you better add another 1,000 calories!)
The game is EASY- In the basic game, they give you a vocabulary word and 4 possible answers. You pick one and you earn 10 grains of rice for the UN World Food program. Takes all of a couple of seconds to earn those 10 grains. You are changing the world by playing a game. If you are learning about beginning chemistry, the great paintings of the world, geography,if you need to brush up on math, or want to begin learning French, Italian, German or Spanish- they got you covered!
4,000 grains sounds hard, but you get 10 grains of rice for every right answer (no penalty for wrong answers). So even if you think that you ate 4,000 calories today, that's only 400 words or problems- you can spread it out if you have to, but do it.
When I introduced the kids at my school to Free Rice, they had a little trouble getting their heads around the concept that THEY could change the world by playing this game (and improve their math or vocabulary skills at the same time). It was a big success in some rooms- enough so, that it was used as a reward in one math class.
Free Rice should take the place of that dumb solitaire game (or what-ever you do to fill those "wasted minutes") on YOUR computer. You can play it for 10 seconds, or 10 hours, but play it. Make a big difference in some someone's life!
Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

Thanks for posting this Storm Crow. We are all so well off, on this part of the globe, even those that are out of work and going through a hard time. As I said to a young girl today, when the rain wet her glasses, and she complained and was ranting how she hated it, be glad you are not blind. I think it shocked her, and she paused and said " I never thought of that"
Count your blessings, and give thanks for all we do have. And remember people that will never have a hope of seeing our wealth.
Peace
