Default How to get the most out of your 400W closet grow

I'm not asking if it depends on the skills of the growers, etc.. I'm asking you grower, how would you do it?, what method would you use? How many plants? Hidro? Soil? Why?...
Scrog?, Sog?

Lets assume the following:
4'x2'x6' espace for flowering
400W MH/HPS system
Good Ventilation with negative pressure on the room.

How much would you expect to yield?
How long would you take on a 60 day finishing strain?

I know this is posted in all the FAQs but in general terms, I want this to help closet growers such as myself, Everyone always have clever solutions and tricks for growing in small places, so how would yo do it?

Personally I'd do a 4 plant SCROG,
Clones > 2-3 weeks veg > 60 days flowering
Growing Method: 3.5G DWC buckets or Reserrvoir + Recirculating DWC Buckets
Yield Expected: over 200g

I'd utilize the vertical space and veg for at least two months. A longer veg usually equates to more buds. But a scrog is a great way to grow (from what I've seen anyway) and yields are good.

I would do a larger method of my current grow: Compact SOG in Coco. I would do 50 plants in rows of 5. One row would come out each week. I would probably use Gatorade bottles. (The perfect thing would be something square, 4.8 inches on each side, or cylindrical with a diameter of 4.8 inches. Obviously I'm ignoring depth a little here, but 1 - 1.5 feet or so should work. Maybe more?)

Expected Yield: 1/4oz per plant. * 5 plants per week = 1 1/4oz per week * 10 weeks = 12 1/2 oz. = ~370g. And that should be on the low side. You can probably get up to 1g / watt this way if you're careful. This is based on the DrBud method which purports to get up to 2g / watt.

This requires a separate place for cloning though that can handle making 5 nice clones every week that are ready to start stretching. (Which means well rooted clones, probably with a few days of veg time. Too much veg time will give you either bushy plants or too tall plants.)

The downside is the 50 plants bit. I should ebb and flow it for real, right? An ebb & flow with 4.8 in^2 rockwool cubes would probably work as well with less hassle when it comes time to water. Though I'm not sure what depth you could have on the rock wool. If 1.5 ft were possible, these would be some very big budded babies.

The other downside is this method probably runs afoul of most legal grows. But if that doesn't bother you, just make sure you keep no more than 99 plants in total...

And I guess it also becomes a hassle dealing with that many plants, giving them all space under the light. But oh well.

That's a good idea too, Smoke.

Sea of Green makes sense if you're willing to take the extra risk. The whole thing is a crap shoot anyhow so it's personal preference whether or not to take the added risk. But as far as the greatest yield is concerned, more plants should equate to more buds, pretty simple logic for the most part.

Right now I have 18 plants under one 400 watt light. Not really a micro grow, but I do flower them small. Once they flower, I reveg them, as now I have several revegging. I had 28 plants under my light last round of flowering. It all depends on how many you want to grow and what kind of yield you need. There is a link in my signature, as there is in smoketolive's sig that will take you to our grows so you can see what we are talking about. (mine is the last link)

keep asking questions!

Peace

Hi Jangel,

How small are the plants when you throw them into flower and what kind of yields are you getting from clones that were put into flower that were less then 12' tall? Please take a look at my grow journal. I'm updating it at this very moment. The first pick is a female clone I plan to put into my flowering room sometime today or tomorrow.

Considering her size what might I expect to yield from her? I know it's a tough question to answer accurately but I'm just looking for a general guesstimate, nothing written in stone.

Thanks,

-the Corsican.
