Default Need Capacitor value for 150w HPS

I went to the local Lowe's yesterday and bought a 150 watt HPS security light that I'm rebuilding into a remote ballast system. Went to Hobby Lobby and found the 4" hurricane glass. Thanks everyone for these suggestions.

Of course, this cheap ballast DOESN'T have a PF capacitor. I've got a few large capacity capacitors laying around but would sure appreciate it if someone would check their low wattage ballast and tell me what "mfd" and voltage rating the capacitor is.

I figure that adding a capacitor will reduce the power consumption. Ya Think ?

TIA

It really isn't necessary to have a power factor correction for a single 150 watt hps, but it does serve a minimal amount of purpose in decreasing actual load drawn. If your circuitry is already loaded up, or you just have the inclination to do so, you can add a 50-55 microfarad capacitor in parallel. The illustration is attached. 52 mfd is a power correction about 90%.

Jigsy420 ..
Wow.. You're on it...

Sorry, to take so long to get back with you... It's been a hectic day here, as well....

YuP ! You had it spot on.. with the Lowe's 150w security light.
No... I have all the circuit power I need... I just like systems to be optimal, if possible.
50 mfd caps huh? well, I've got a couple 45 mfd with 450 working voltage, so with this cap on the low voltage side of the exciter, .. I was just concerned if the 1620 peak voltage might come into play.

Ah ! I think I'll try it, since I have the capacitors..

Thanks you So Much for your troubles. If there's any thing I can do for you.... let me know..

Hey Somedude !

Yes... The highest wattage HPS security light that the local Lowe's carry, is a regular curved neck, yard light.
Per Jigsy420 's recommendation, I'm going to put a 50 mfd. 250v capacitor across the input line of this ballast, hoping it will increase PF therefore lowering the power used.

Thanks again Jigsy420 for your help.

Seems like you know what you're doing, just a friendly one, remember to lose the photo eye (photocell).

hello,

i have been trying to figure out what kind of capacitor rating i would need for a 50 watt hps or mh, 70 watt hps or mh, and also 100 watt hps or mh. i know it isnt exactly necessary but i would like to be as efficient as possible. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
