Default What Size Light for my Closet???

HI Jangel!!!! OK, so if I were to follow your method, I would need to get myself a HID. But they are pretty exspensive right? Where would I buy one? Any recommendations? Do you have a link to one that you like or that you think would work good for my "fictional" set-up?

I test them by temporarily switching the lighting cycle to a 12/12 and that causes the plant to go into flowering mode. The shorter time that you do this the better. You can tell by the little "pistols" that pop out. Then I go back to the 21/3 cycle (that's what I have been using). When these guys were seedlings I had them on a 12/12 because I read that it help create females.

Try our sponsor, HidHut...and if you call their 800 number and ask for Justin, say you are from GreenPassion, they will most likely give you a discount on the shipping.

It depends how much you want to spend as far as a light and how big your space is. Give me some more details and I will see what I can find for you.

You don't have to go big. I only have a 400w light. I would love to bump it up to a 600 but just don't have the cash right now, and it gets the job done for me! I just finished flowering over 50 plants in a couple months....but some where budsicles so not huge...I need to know how high your area is and all other sizes as well as what type of ventilation you have or can get. It all is important in the whole picture.

The space that I have to work with is about 5 feet across, 8 feet tall and about 3 feet deep. It is a closet and I am running everything off of the 110 power supply. I could probably do 3-4 babies at a time, but am sticking to 2 for now. Since it is a closet, there is a white metal wire shelf at about 6'. So basically it is a small space. What do you think?

Can you ventilate it into the attic ? You will need to get the heat out somehow, sweets. This will determine how big a light your space can handle. I would think maybe a small one,250w would be all you could fit in there. Let me know about venting...

I have it ventilated through the wall with a typical bathroom fan, there is another closet next to it that the air flows into and then out into the rest of the upstairs of the house. I probably could run it out through the attic if I wanted to. Also, the metal shelving is what i hang my lights off of now.

Sun System Light Kits - - * 150 watt high pressure sodium bulb included - delivers an amazing 16,000 lumen

I'm thinking this one is cheap and probably ideal for my small space. What do you think?

Okay, first off, if you are in flower, unless you don't care if you house smells of weed, you need a carbon filter. You can make that cheaply, check out the DIY section. Also, look in the Last Knowledge project thread. There is a really good one in that.

Second, I would vent it out the attic. It is pretty simple if you can get up there to do it. It will also help conceal your heat signature. Then you must must must make sure you have proper cool air intake coming into the space or else all the efforts will be for naught. More on that later....I am moving this to it's own thread sweetie...so don't be surprised if all of a sudden you have a new thread. LOL!

3 feet deep is pretty good. You can do well with that. Here are some links I pulled from HidHut. I like the ones that are air cooled. This will help you tremendously in that space and you will avoid a lot of heat issues if you set it up correctly and then you can get the plants closer to the light. You will need more support than a wire rack to support your lights. That is very dangerous.

You MUST have it securely attached to a beam with an eye hook and chain. A big eye hook. Biggest cause of grow fires is lights falling...don't be a statistic. BE SAFE!

I would not go too small. You might as well stick with floros if you do.

Also Don, consider you will have to upgrade your ventilation fan. Your bath fan will not work well with the higher heat from HID lights.

OK, any thoughts on Fans?? Should I do a search? I am starting to feel like one of those guys that wants to get his hand held instead of doing a little research, and I don't want to be that guy. Peace to you too! <3

Okay, for my whole room I have a 6inch vortex. I would suggest reading the knowledge project contest on Ventilation and air exchange. Measure your room, and talk to one of the fellows on this. They will help you with the math. I know the principles, but don't ask me to figure out cfm etc...I will get totally lost! I am pretty sure Pullo has the math in there for how to figure it out. I would suggest aprox. a 4 inch one. You can dial it down, but you cannot dial it up so if you think you nmight be going bigger someday, get a 4 inch, even a 6 in one....but I am totally talking out of my hat on this.

Hope that helps buddy.

I did look at that one, but I worry you will be disappointed...it is not much stronger than a 100 watt light bulb buddy...think about it! That is just 150 watts and we used to use a 100 bulbs just to read by! Not much to those ones....

Thank you my friend! It is nice to be appreciated.

One other thing Don, make sure you have enough volts in the plugs you hook this up to. You might want to have a couple more plugs put in on seperate breakers. Just to be safe. At least check it to be sure.

Peace

I have one of those sun system 150watt hps lights and I must say, looking back, I wish I would have gotten a bigger one. It just isn't enough light and I'm forced to use tons of supplemental lighting from flouro's if I want anything worth looking at when I'm done. I have my set up in a two foot deep by three foot wide regular closet in my bedroom and the last couple of harvests I've had were six plants each, but it really wasn't much yield at all. I think the first harvest was about six oz all told after drying and curing, and the last one was about three oz cause I had to cut a couple weeks early due to some bug issues. I have a 4in inline fan, brand name is eco... something... and its connected to a phresh filter, one of the little ones but rated for the cfm of the fan. I would recommend the phresh filter as they have a two year warranty compared to a year and a half with most others. Those two things were the most expensive part of initial cost for me. The fan cost about 140 US and the filter was about 100 US, but well worth the cost.

I also second the notion of making sure you're outlets can handle the load you are putting out from them. I have a single outlet with a power strip supplying my room and it makes me nervous, but I know the strip will cut the power if it draws too much. I also have a smoke alarm hanging inside the closet, and a fire extinguisher right outside it just in case. Would be hard to explain to the fire department why your closet caught on fire you know.

Ok guys, you've talked me into the 400 watt. I now have my little bathroom fan blowing up into that attic and the house smells a little better now . Now I am considering how to use this 400w light with a new fan. I have thinking that there are fans and ducting that you can attach directly to the light...Is that how you folks are doing it?

Also, I am not sure what kind of light bulb to put into this one. Is it the HPS or the MH? Or can either fit? Or are HPS and MH the same...

OK, I'm looking around right now and realize that they are not the same. Will either work in this 400W ballast that you recommended Jangel?
