(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The most well known person in the world on the subject of marijuana, author Jack Herer, had a heart attack Saturday, after a fiery speech at the Portland Hempstalk Event at Kelly Point Park.
Ironically, Jack told our Doctor Phil Leveque, an old friend of his in the fight to legitimize and legalize marijuana, that he was feeling better Saturday than he had, "In the ten years."
Event staff came together quickly and called in the paramedic crew that treated Jack in the area backstage where he fell ill. Madeline Martinez, Executive Director of Oregon NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, says Jack didn't look like he felt well after the well received speech, and she told him he should get some water.
Shortly after that he apparently collapsed where he was sitting, and the emergency crews were called in. Bands kept playing and the medical personnel spent a considerable amount of time stabilizing Jack, before loading him in an ambulance and transporting him to the Emanuel Trauma Center in Portland.
Source report that Jack was in critical condition when he was admitted to the hospital with his son at his side. Soon after that, they were told that he was the victim of a heart attack, a result of arterial blockage.
Jack was was undergoing angioplasty surgery late Saturday.
Jack suffered a stroke several years ago that left him somewhat challenged in terms of speaking, but today more than one person watching him noted that his speech was much clearer than even the year before.
Jack Herer is beyond legendary with popular culture and his book, "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" is the largest and first account of the real story of marijuana and the techniques used by big money corporations to demonize and criminalize it.




Time to send some positive vibes toward Jack! He has done so much for us!

I recently just learned of Jack. About a week ago I knew more about the strain then the man. I should read his book. I hope YHWY will keep him comfortable and I hope he makes a full recovery.

LATEST UPDATE ON JACK HERER

High Folks,

I want to give everyone an update on Jack. I just spoke with his assistant, Chuck, as of 12:30am east. Avery fast rumor coming out of Hempstalk of which I also reported on was only partially true.

Jack has NOT had angioplasty yet and may not have to. Last night the doctors put him in an induced coma and lowered his body temp with ice. They are keeping him this way for 48 more hours. His heart is doing well for now so they think he will be ok soon.

Chuck is staying in contact with Jack's family for updates so I'll let the list know when I know more.

Thank you, Tim and Bonnie, for getting out this information about Jack's condition. I would like to let everyone know that the nurses had put a body ice-pack on him to bring his temperature down, not a chemical, and they had to induce the coma to keep his body from shivering. This is a procedure they use to minimize damage to his brain. He was also put on a ventilator and pain medication. After about 24 hours, they started to warm him up and then wait another 48 hours before trying to bring him out of the induced coma. Jack's doctor told Jack's assistant, Chuck Jacobs and I, that it may take several days for him to wake up, and that he had had a "small" heart attack. He said that Jack's vital signs were stable and that we wouldn't know until he wakes up, what damage was done. As Chuck and I watched him laying there, we sensed that his strong will and his pledge to his "teacher, partner and friend", Edwin "Captain Ed" M. Adair III that "we'd swear to work everyday to legalize marijuana and get all pot prisoners out of jail, until we were dead, marijuana was legal, or we could quit when we turned 84." would motivate him to fight to come back to us all. Jack is still with us and with the incredible outpouring of love from people around the world, I believe he is coming back to us soon!
