Fire Marshall inspections of Grow Rooms ?
Michigan is about to embark along this experiment of State regulated Medical Marijuana.
In Michigan, the state has set down guidelines and rules governing the extent and scope of the program.
There is one aspect that has not been covered and I would like to bring it to your attention, to debate.
With the flood of DIY growers sprouting up throughout the state, many who are disabled and on a tight budget.
I fear for the safety of the patient from the hazard of FIRE.
Does the State or Local Government have a right and/or duty to inspect
the plethora of indoor grow rooms to ensure they comply with safety regulations ?

I can understand why they want to do that.. I don't see how it would really be that much different than regular construction with permits/inspections/etc. Im pretty sure they don't want to deal with big fires because someone didn't wire something right.

That is definitely a good question Richard Owl Mirror, and frankly... I don't have a clue.
We're venturing into somewhat uncharted territory here, and every state will have different procedures or rules to follow.
As each state passes compassionate laws, maybe we could get folks to chime in & report on the different state's grow room requirements & care giver licensing procedures as they become public.

Yes, some may take this question to mean "Invasion of Privacy" etc...
I truly believe it is a matter of safety and see nothing wrong with allowing such a valid inspection to ensure the safe operation of indoor lighting equipment, some of which has a tendency to explode !
I haven't seen one rule in any of the various state guidelines which even remotely broaches this area of concern.
I wish these states would allow a provision for growing outdoors.
It would be so much more safe as well as rewarding since, spending time in the garden is therapeutic in and of itself.

Well, I have seen pics of co-op grows that were outside. California, I think.
Maybe they will allow it in your state.

Hi, unfortunately those who crafted Michigan's Law limit our ability to 12 plants at any one time (that means if it has a root it counts). They mandate that it be contained within a locked enclosure. (closet/etc.)
I have a theory which is yet tested where an outdoor grow could be regarded as compliant if a completely sealed cage of fencing exited, locked.
Of course, the neighbors may notice ;>}
Can you imagine people sinking a "dog run" in concrete, padlocking it and thumbing their collective noses ?

So, I can plug anything I want into my electrical outlets. But, if it happens to be a UL listed, safety-tested, HID light, I should have to be inspected?
I can't see how that will do anything. People who steal power and jury-rig lights don't sign up for inspections. Inspections will just make it that much more difficult to get growing.
Rules: good people don't need them and bad people ignore them.

Enclosed means it has walls and a roof. So, a locked greenhouse would be awesome!

I don't know that they would accept a dog run as that is considered "open to the elements". I think they mean by enclosed, with walls. But you could yeild a lot more off your plants in a season if say you had an "enclosed and locked" yard, that was not visible from the street. Mogie and Hooker Road are legal growers in Oregon and they grow outdoors, in an "endclosed" area, fenced and screened so you cannot see it.
Peace

Yeah, somebody is bound to test the extent of our new law.
I did begin designing a product which I called "Compassion Hut"
Basically a greenhouse that would comply with the intent and letter of the law.
The thing to worry about is access and thieves.
