Okay folks. I have cut clones to root for bonsai mums. I tried 3 different methods:
1. Rapid rooters- I have had a lot of success with these. I did as they suggested and put perlite in the bottom, and around the sides of the rooters to aid in air and water circulation. 2 of these as I need to continue on with these anyway. For bonsai though, I do not think these will fit the bill as they stay with the plant for life and to root prune a plant down to little you cannot get them free of this. So the ones I have rooted like this will be for future flowering. I find the same for peat pellets. And the one bonsai plant that is rooted in a peat pellet seems to have a deficiancy or maybe the peat is getting acidic in such a small root ball. I could see this happening. I might have to replace her if I cannot work around this.
2. Just perlite. no explanation needed.
3. Soil. I added some perlite to the bottom so that the water which will be in the bottom of the cloner, will not super saturate the soil.
Here are the pics. first the cell pacs prepared differently for each genus. Then what I mixed into water to help them root. It is Shultz powdered rooting compound. Some Superthrive. And a few drops of SM90, cause it can't hurt and could help root growth. Then there are the clones. I have them in recycled lettuce thingies, on a heating pad, under one lone T-8 floresent. All very green still. No wilting. I know many don't think it nesacary to cover them, but hey, I want this to work now. so I am pulling out all the stops.

I am also trying to clone a flowering plant so if you wish to see that it is located here. I will not duplicate what is already posted. Those are also in this cloning lot. Cloning a Flowering Plant ~ Will it work? |

Here are some pics of the Bonsai'd mums I have already going, just for an update.
First is Isi, next is Kish, then there is TC1, and last is TC2. These are a couple days old. I will try and take more later. Also, last is showing the bottoms of the containers. I think drainage is always important.
Enjoy,
Peace

Yesterday, before they froze or truely died, I took some cuttings from 2 males I have living in the back of my barn. I have done nothing to help these guys live but they have! I think I have watered them once. They are just reliant on the rain. It shows you how tough these guys are!
I think I have learned something about males. I do not know this for sure so if anyone knows differently, please correct me. While trying to collect some pollen with a male flower spike, I have roots growing out of it! Now, I know from trying to root flowering girls that this does not happen with females. My theory it that males have it in them to survive so strongly they will root under any circumstances and therefore perpetuate the species. Females have the chemistry to concentrate their energy to the flowers, and not roots, so they can survive by making flowers and hence seeds. And this prevents them from rooting. They will eventually but it is not easy. I have never had a problem rooting a male plant.
Anyway, like the girls I did different types of clones, to encourage the possiblility of pruning the roots. I have found with the girls, possibly due to the moist environment of my cloning boxes, the ones in soil, over all did not do well. Of all of the girls in dirt, with perlite at the bottom, I have one that made it, a Northern Flame. First, pics of the clones that are rooting from before, and the new male clones witht the red tags, then the Bonsai mums under the florescents and just the Bonsai mums. All are doing very well. I have also found that since my containers are clear on the bottom, it is easy to see how well the roots are growing.

Rep Power: 500 | | Nepali Grizzly Bonsai
Next, I am having some fun with 2 of my plants. These are two Nepali Grizzly that I have discovered are most likely Autoflowering. These have not stopped flowering no matter what I have done. I have had to cut off buds as they have started to dry out on the plant. But still they keep flowering! So what I have done is cut off all of the flower pistols, and buds, exept at the end of the four branches I have growing after I topped them both. Then with twist ties I have bent them down to look like weeping willows. I have these under my veg lights and yet, they will NOT just veg! Let us see what happens now! If they do well, I will root prune them down the road. Right now they are in one liter containers. Here we go. Last shot is of all the pieces I cut off them.

Hey Cletus! How are your girls doing? | Hi Jangel,
Here's what my little bonsai looks like now. As you can see she's working on growing 6 clones for me. I plan on taking them in a few more days once they get a little bigger. I'm building one of those Rubbermaid grow boxes and I plan on starting my first batch with those six clones. I'm going to try to grow budsicles in little 20 ounce pop bottles with them, like DrBudGreenGenes does.
Our outdoor girls are doing great! I've also included some budshots from them after the picture of the bonsai.

Thank you Cletus. How tall did you let the first little branches get? Mine are no longer than 2 inches and from my understanding you do not pinch them back till they are 5 in or so long. Does that sound right? I am just dieing to prune mine but I don't want to mess them up.
Your buds look wonderful! What type of plant are they? outside ? so how long do you think till harvest? Do you get frost there?

I kind of bent the rules a little and clipped them after they had grown a couple of nodes instead of trying to go by inches. If it doesn't work out I figure I can just start another one from one of the clones I'm getting. The clone I started with wasn't really a very good one to begin with. Quote: |

| They are just some bagseed we planted outdoors back in April. I think they are mostly indica from the looks of them. We had some sativas too, but they hermied. We do get frost here, but not soon enough to be a concern as far as harvest goes. We're hoping for an early October harvest but of course the trichome color will be the determining factor.

How about your outdoor crop? You're in Canada, right? I bet you're really worried about frost as far north as you are.

yup, Pot can take some frost, especailly if it is naturalized and used to colder temps gradually. And being sheltered by trees near by will also protect them. I am already thinking about possibly bringing some of my clone in if I have to. My ear is on the weather every day! I have 14 clones about 4 ft tall now, with tons of buds forming...I don't want to lose them. Then I have the older girls, further along, but it has been raining so freaking much here, they are just a bit ahead of my clones, so I will see what happens! I am hoping for a long Indian summer! My flower room will be empty soon so I will see what i will do. I already have a bunch for the next flower waiting, inside veging as well, but I will just have to slow them down I guess. Not sure...

Sounds like you've got a major operation going on there.
Do you have those outdoor ones in buckets or planted in the ground? It will be a pain to move them if they're in the ground.

They are in the ground, in dirt I mixed up which might make them easier to dig up. The link is in my signature for my outdoor odyssey. Also, I have a video Jonnyappleweed made for me! on my outside grow. Here it is. They are in about 4 - 6 gallons of their own soil, so it might work. not sure. Hopefully they will finish outside. We will see! And it is not so major, I just love growing! I had such fun cloning and growing I couldn't stop! LOL!

Well here's hoping they finish outside for you!
I guess no matter where you are, if you're growing outdoors then Mother Nature has one or another peril in store for you. You have the frost up there, and we have hurricanes down here.
It just makes it all the more satisfying when you finally do get to harvest that crop.

Hi Jangel,
My Bonsai just had eight babies, and they're all girls!
But seriously, she got her first "haircut" today. I've attached before and after pictures, plus a picture of the clones I got from her today. At the next set of cuttings she should produce twelve or more. It's amazing to me that these little plants put off so many clones, as small as they are.

Here are some more pics of the girls. These where taken on the 18th of Sept, I will take more later to show the growth since this. My male clones I took all died. I will take more of them and see if I can still save these genetics later in the week. I have been sick so it slows it all down.
First here is a picture of them all from the top. Then ISI, showing how I trimmed her back. I did not save these clones as I am chock a block right now and might have to bring more plants in from outside soon if it gets very cold here.
