Default LED to Supplement CFL/FL

I have been really interested in the use of LEDs to supplement compact fluorescent and fluorescent tube lighting. both are cheap to run and produce little to no heat. in the past I've tried using the LED lightbulbs with edison bases, they put off a cool white like fluorescent lights do. tried using a couple high powered cool white LED bulbs with edison bases in addition to a small row of 1 watt blue and red LEDs hooked up to a battery, thought the cool white might help more in the veg phase.
does anyone think using a combination of CFL and fluorescent tubes in both cool and warm white and with a supplement of UVA and UVB fluorescent tubes (something I've tried) would get much benefit from adding cool white LEDs plus a row of maybe a few hundred multi-watt ultra bright LEDs? would like to try and run the LEDs off of solar... but I'm getting ahead of myself.
I've seen some plant light LED schematics on instructables but haven't bothered yet till I hear more about how LEDs can be used as supplement lighting.
by the way, sorry if this site has already been mentioned, but if it hasn't check out Growing Marijuana with LED, Growshow for some interesting results from cannabis grown with LEDs only.

Just my opinion, BUT if i were you i would be thinking more onlong the lines of using l.e.d.'s and possibly supplementing with cfl's if necessary.

Just my two cents

thanks for the links, lots of good info.

and that looks like a really cool set up you have, seems like you got some good results with that.

when I do end up soldering a set together I think I might try to set it up so that some rows I can switch from blue to red when the photoperiod changes. there are some good online/catalog electronics distributors where you can usually find good deals on bulk amounts of LEDs in the specific wavelengths you need. for some electronics projects I had I used to get my parts through NTE Electronics and All Electronics and I think ramsey electronics sells LEDs in bulk in their catalog too but I can't remember.

There's one thing you might want to know-
While UVB increases resin production, UVA can inhibit plant growth.
I think the CFLs for reptile terrariums produce UVB and very little, if any, UVA. I would use those if you want to add UV.
I've also read somewhere that the 1 watt LEDs are the most efficient now... Seems odd, but HIDs and Flouros are the same way- the highest wattage doesn't mean the most efficient.
Also, I've noticed that CFL spotlights work WAY better than trying to make a reflector for a standard CFL bulb.
To save electricity, you can have your LEDs pulse at about 720 Hz. Pulsing doesn't affect the growth, but cuts down on the electric bill.
This may sound alightly absurd, but add a couple green LEDs... I'm about to post a topic about it.

Since you're making the LED lighting yourself, could you answer a couple questions for me?
Do you use the LEDs on a 12v DC or standard (120 or 220) AC current?
