I had been skeptical of LEDs because they are expensive and, to me, unproven. The savings in watts and reduced electricity were enough to tempt me into a 90 watt UFO, but unexpected money changed my mind into purchasing a 270 watt enhanced spectrum Supernova from HID Hut. This was a huge expenditure for me, since I am very poor - paycheck to paycheck. Shipping was fine, and my light arrived working like they said it would. It appears well made as far as housing, not flimsy or junky. When I turned it on and played with the knobs, I couldn't wait to get some plants under it, so I planted a bunch of VISC genetics. When they popped up, I wondered, would they stretch? Nope. They stayed squat and dark green, growing quickly as if they were centimeters away from a cool white flourescent. So far so good. I wonder how they will bloom? Only time will tell.
I have grown under tube flourescents (veg and clone only), CFLs, small HIDs, and many 1000 watters, so I think I can give a fair comparrison.
I am ELATED with this light so far - it is my dream light. My grow is spookily simple - no exhaust fans, no Air Conditioning, no heat, only 270 watts. And something I didn't expect was how cool it looks! To have a cool blue hue emanating from the closet instead of a blinding beam of heat is way more inconspicuous and easy to live with. The only thing that matters, though, is how the plants grow, and like I said - so far, everything is excellent, very short nodes and happy plants, only 2 weeks old. I am worried that since the light isn't beaming out with such ferociousness as a 600 or 1000 watt classic HID, that the thing won't cover as many square feet, and I'm worried about how the light will penetrate into a mature canopy. We'll see. At the bare minimum though, this light has proven itself for a fantastic hobby grow or closet veg room. The only thing I have to find out is, can it produce some weight. If so, I will be buying more of these. Shoot, it would pay for itself with a QP of medicine.
