Rep Power: 20 | | affordable LED grow lights
We are catalog junkies..rarely can afford to order anything, but love browsing through them.
Look what I found in my latest Heartland America catalog.. Heartland America: 2 Pack Miracle LED Grow Lights We have been looking into the LED option, but all the lights were so expensive, and these are actually in our budget.

I can't find a listed wattage or luminosity, I called them and they were unable to tell me the actual wattage draw, or who manufactors the LEDs. She kept saying, "they're 50 wattage equivalent"...uh...equivalent to what? A watt is a measurement of voltage X amperage, what is it for this light? "50 watt equivalent"...ugh! "its 110 volt right"..."yes"..."how many amps does it draw"..."I don't know"...ugh!
Big red flag going up for me.

I thought 50 watts was 50 watts whether it was metal halide, HPS, incandescent...so if you bought 20 bulbs you would have the equivalent of a 1000 watt light.
Forgive me if I am wrong

Unfortunately, 50 watt "equivalent", means that in that company's OPINION, their LED bulb can replace, "50 watts" of illumination from ANOTHER type of bulb. What type? They didn't say.
50 watts is 50 watts, which is why I called looking for the actual wattage of the light. If you have some of these and a 'watt meter' I would be interested in seeing what they actually draw.
It is extremely unfortunate, but a lot of people selling LED lights straight up LIE about what their light can do. "Replaces a 1,000 watt HID" is a very common claim for LED lights that are barely 100 watts, the same lights that people struggle to break half a gram per watt with. HID smashes a gram per watt when setup to do so, so that 100 watt or less LED is the true, "50 watt equivalent"...like this; http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/grd/1413247861.html | | The Following User Says Thank You to 6951A For This Useful Post: | |

There are no cheap LED lights which actually work. They cost a fortune.
I work for an LED light company and I'll be the first to tell you it's not a cheap way to start growing. It is, however, very cost-effective over time.

Watts are watts....but that doesn't mean that 1000 watts of incandescent will put out as many LUMENS as a 1000 watt HID will.
Then there's the efficiency factor. While iit may not look like it when you fire one up, a 1000 watt HID is more efficient than those 20 light bulbs could ever be.
from most to least efficient
HID
Floros
incandescent
(not sure where LED would go)
stick with HID gramma. Leave the purty colored lights for the Xmas tree.

Rep Power: 7 | | GREETINGS ALL! I'm kinda new I just been lurking and saw you guys here. And I came across this thought maybe it mite help. A site called the Cheap Vegetable Gardener made a LED grow box from a rubbermaid tote and LED christmas lights, and clams to do quite well with it. I don't know for sure myself, but just thought I would put it out there for consideration. I was thinking about it, if it works it would be an affordable way to go, especially after christmas when stuff is half price.

It looks like this Xmas I will run a little test grow with these lights and see if anything comes of it. I will call it MY XMAS GROW. I have the space and I'm legal so let's see definitively if the darn things work! (Xmas lights I mean not commercial LED's) They are cheap to buy so I will get a hand full of them. This might be fun. |

As to watts . I run leds in flower that are 1 watt per bulb.
In veg and clone they are the supplementals with .6 and such ,whatever works in the array.
Ive found some strains flower well ( cheese ,ak-47, kush etc..) but some are weak like diesels for me.
But i like the leds. i can put one 90 watt over each plant in flower and smile at the trichomes .
I don't listen to claims from companies as to what they compare too. I look at watt per bulb and the draw at the plug. I let my harvest tell me what they compare too.
Live well
