Rep Power: 0 | | Uniforms. Favorite? Least favorite?
In the mid-70's, the Marine corps discontinued the "Tropical Uniform", aka "trops". It was a wool-blend material, with silk anti-itch panels to protect sensitive areas. (armpits, crotch)
Whenever on liberty or leave, I generally wore civvies. But, I seldom missed an opportunity to don my trops. I loved that uniform. It was comfortable, surprisingly cool, in warm weather, and kept its creases without wrinkling. While on leave, if I happened to attend a wedding or funeral, (both of which happened), I wore the trops. Did I mention that I really liked that uniform?
So, in about 1975 or 1976, they decide to replace it with "kacky" (sp) Merely considering the option of wearing them, caused wrinkling. The color was in the tropical neighborhood, but, that was the only similarity. Anyone who wore them, could be identified by the "pit stains".
So, what type of tie are they authorizing, now. It was narrow, when I was in. But, I understand that it changes, from time to time.

Summer Service Alpha is what we called it in the late 60's I believe.
TIE? It was a thin one for me too. I liked the looks of the winter service duds.

I never did know the designations of the various uniforms. Such as, Summer Service Alpha, etc. The squadron had posters with pictures with the designations. When my brother (former Marine) found out that I was going to "swing with the wing", he said, "You're not in the Marines. You're in the Air Force."
Once in a while, we picked up a few grunts from Camp LeJeune, and they would jump out of the CH-46f at about 4000 ft. These training missions gave us the opportunity to wander around the base, go to the PX, etc. I remember thinking that the New River residents should be required to visit LeJeune, occassionally. Then, they would know how good they have it at New River. Compared to LeJeune, we were like guests in a nice hotel.
