Anyone ever play Dark Age of Camelot? It's an MMO with an amazing pvp system...
In fact it's widely considered to have done the best overall pvp system of any mmo to date. They created what is called Realm vs Realm combat (or RvR) for short. This is an open world pvp system where three seperate realms do battle in shared PvP zones. Three main zones, 1 for each realm. Each realm has it's own "home" zones where only they may go. Another shared zone, designed for PvE exists, but only one realm can use the portals to enter that zone at a time...it's determined by who holds the most keeps in the shared pvp zones (frontiers). Whoever has the most keeps gets the shared pve zone, but if you logged out in there you can log back in, making for interesting meetings.
Anyway, there is a free server run by private players, called Uthgard, and they are launching "Old Frontiers", which is the original shared pvp zones when the game launched. Mythic (the game developer) launched an expansion dubbed, "New Frontiers" which was 1 of a few expansions believed to have ruined the game. Uthgard is undoing that (that and other) mistake and launching a free Old Frontiers server on November 12th.
Dark Age of Camelot can be downloaded for free, and played for free as well. A friend and I will be rolling on the free server within a week or so, anyone who wants to play is welcome to join us.
