Default Windows XP - 24 Hidden App

Windows XP - 23 Hidden App
To run any of these apps go to Start > Run and type the executable name :

1) Character Map = charmap.exe (very useful for finding unusual characters)

2) Disk Cleanup = cleanmgr.exe

3) Clipboard Viewer = clipbrd.exe (views contents of Windows clipboard)

4) Dr Watson = drwtsn32.exe (Troubleshooting tool)

5) DirectX diagnosis = dxdiag.exe (Diagnose & test DirectX, video & sound cards)

6) Private character editor = eudcedit.exe (allows creation or modification of characters)

7) IExpress Wizard = iexpress.exe (Create self-extracting / self-installing package)

8 Microsoft Synchronization Manager = mobsync.exe (appears to allow synchronization of files on the network for when working offline. Apparently undocumented).

9) Windows Media Player 5.1 = mplay32.exe (Retro version of Media Player, very basic).

10) ODBC Data Source Administrator = odbcad32.exe (something to do with databases)

11) Object Packager = packager.exe (to do with packaging objects for insertion in files, appears to have comprehensive help files).

12) System Monitor = perfmon.exe (very useful, highly configurable tool, tells you everything you ever wanted to know about any aspect of PC performance, for uber-geeks only )

13) Program Manager = progman.exe (Legacy Windows 3.x desktop shell).

14) Remote Access phone book = rasphone.exe (documentation is virtually non-existant).

15) Registry Editor = regedt32.exe [also regedit.exe] (for hacking the Windows Registry).

16) Network shared folder wizard = shrpubw.exe (creates shared folders on network).

17) File siganture verification tool = sigverif.exe

18 Volume Contro = sndvol32.exe (I've included this for those people that lose it from the System Notification area).

19) System Configuration Editor = sysedit.exe (modify System.ini & Win.ini just like in Win98! ).

20) Syskey = syskey.exe (Secures XP Account database - use with care, it's virtually undocumented but it appears to encrypt all passwords, I'm not sure of the full implications).

21) Microsoft Telnet Client = telnet.exe

22) Driver Verifier Manager = verifier.exe (seems to be a utility for monitoring the actions of drivers, might be useful for people having driver problems. Undocumented).

23) Windows for Workgroups Chat = winchat.exe (appears to be an old NT utility to allow chat sessions over a LAN, help files available).

24) msconfig, extremely helpful utillity, especially for turning off items, when your pc has to many programs running at startup, also very handy for locationg spyware, that runs with your pc.

Murf, I too considered going back to XP once, but then I looked at the facts:
Vista will maintain complete compatibility with XP including drivers.
Support for XP will become non-existent due to Microsoft's "Life-cycle" policy.
Also, of course, Vista is the future and will eventually tie in to Microsoft's Surface technology. If you are not familiar with the remarkable technology that is Surface. Here is a video clip of Surface in action. This is the future of computers.

There are also many benefits to the Vista OS that you will not find in other OS's, and if you do, it's not as user friendly. There is a lot more I could go into, but it would be too off topic. L0L

Geez fatman, I hate to have a difference of opinion however...
I've not heard anything good about vista at all, from anyone yet.

XP is stable, and it works as it is intended, unlike vista, and theres still 5 years of support left for XP.

I just built a PC for a client, and he is getting it with XP pro, not vista.

While vista may very well be the operating system of the future, we are still in the present.
Peace

Ok I just took a hit off the pipe and my mind is rolling.I can see my cat on this coffee table, the cat have a field day.I can think of a couple of things that I would not be doing on that coffee table.Gives internet porn a new meaning.Dont sit your phone down on anybodys table.Little kids just learning to walk and stand by the coffee table, little fingers.Could be a good learning tool for them too. The technology today scare the crap out of me.Some cause I dont know how to use it and it cost to much.Shoot I dont know how to do alot of stuff on a this pc and then boom I got to buy a new one and start all over again. It blows me away with what can be done .Just wish they aply it to MM. Good Post. PEACE

I'm currently using a Mac and I love it :D

However I'm excited to see what Windows 7 will bring. Apparently the guy who was the chief designer for the Office 2007 system will be heading up Windows 7 which is slated for a late 2010 release.

One cool thing I've heard about it already is that it will be able to emulate any OS, Windows 95 to present. Which means, no more compatibility issues!

Vista is powerful, but MS dropped the ball on a lot of cool things Vista was supposed to have.

For me however, nothing beats a UNIX based system. And mac just looks so damn pretty! Goes well with my iphone.

what scares me is the government is going to say we don't have people qualified to build these computers and send their contracts overseas...

just like the contract for airplanes recently that was given to the europeans where the government said we did not have anybody qualified to build them... come on America founded airplanes...

Thank God Bill Gates has the money and intelligence to at least to fight them...
