Rep Power: 195 | | Suggestions for Protecting Yourself Online - Especially on Cannabis Related Sites
It may exist somewhere else, but I have a few suggestions for everyone. And I am sure others can chime in as well. These suggestions are for people to protect themselves on this and other forums.
Everyone knows this The Golden Rules of Cannabis Growing: Don't Sell, Don't Tell, Don't Smell
But there are several other good things you can do. Hopefully we aren't in too much danger if we aren't trafficking. But we still should be careful. (There are other threats than the DEA...)
1.) Don't use the same password for your email address and forum account.
2.) Use a special email account for clandestine activities. Only log in to it through TOR or some anonymous service.
3.) Don't use the same password (or login if you can help it) for other clandestine forums. (That way if one gets hacked, only one gets hacked.)
These few things can help protect all of your accounts, not just the one here.
I'm sure there are plenty of other ideas, but since we are changing our passwords, it's a good time to make sure we're safe!

what a sad state of affairs when they don't seem to have other things to worry about than a few folks who like mj. Take the crime out of the streets... murder, rapes, theft, ect , ect. You know the real crimes....
thanks for the heads up!

easy way to tell if it's crypted or not.. look at your address bar in your browser.. http://www.greenpassion.org <-- not encrypted https://www.greenpassion.org <-- encrypted
most browsers usually have a little padlock icon somewhere too

Right. And if it's not encrypted (and you're on the TOR network, some other anonymizing source, or something else that can read your traffic (your isp)) you run the risk of sharing your password with others... So be careful.
Stoner translator: Only use TOR for your clandestine email account, and only use an email service that has https available so you can protect your email password. It isn't practical to browse the site with TOR. (Or recommended with the current lack of security cert.)

pidgin (pidgin.im) and the OTR (Off the record) plugin work great.. there is also the firegpg plugin for firefox which will let you send encrypted emails.

Tried getting here earlier today thru an anonymizing website. No go. message said: 'your IP has been banned'. Not sure if is on tor or not, but the site wasn't torproject.

I wouldn't try to come here that way unless you have something speedy that you can trust. TOR is too slow and your passwords here are sent via cleartext. DON'T DO IT. Trusted connections to here only until they get the cert up. | | The Following User Says Thank You to SmokeToLive For This Useful Post:

It isn't practical to browse the site with TOR. (Or recommended with the current lack of security cert.) | Can anyone help explain this stuff? I'm not new to computers or anything but I have no Idea what yall are talking about. What do you mean by "encrypted"? I don’t think your talking about writing everything in code so how does this work. How can I be sharing my password with others? I don’t use any "anonymizing source" whatever that is. I just try to use a computer that cannot be traced back to me. How do I find out if Hotmail for example has https. Is there going to be some "activate https" button I click on or what? If you really need a safe way to E-mail just give an E-mail account and password to the intended recipient then save the message as a draft instead of sending it. When the recipient logs on they just check the drafts. I got that one from the movie trader. Another thing I would suggest is to never have the same user name on a site like greenpassion as on a site like Myspace or Facebook. I had to change my user name from an old nickname when I Googled it and found that an old Myspace page was the first result because one person left a comment using that nickname. A simple Google search of my user name could have been the end for me. | | The Following User Says Thank You to ATX36 For This Useful Post:

I don't have time to explain all at the moment, but I am happy to later.
But basically on the internet anyone in between your computer and your destination address (which is several computers usually) can read what you're sending/receiving. If it's encrypted, they can't. (The computer does this for you.) If you're on the TOR network, then the last stop on the TOR network can read what you're sending/receiving.
So, if you're not using an anonymizer, your ISP or anyone listening on your ISP's lines can see what you're doing. But TOR, without encryption, is doing the same thing with even less easily trustable people. (Not that they're all bad, but there are many people using the TOR network with the purpose of password sniffing. Encryption can help avoid that.)
Basically, if you want to keep people from reading what you're doing: encryption. If you want to keep people from knowing what you're doing, where you are, or exactly what you're reading: encryption + anonymizer.

Is there any way to use Greenpassion with encryption + anonymizer?

Not at the moment because they do not have a security certificate. (Unless you use some sort of paid service you can trust, but I wouldn't know one.)

Your best protection, IMO, is to take the time to BECOME LEGAL to grow this plant.
As a legal patient, I feel I have EVERY RIGHT to be here and I refuse to live in paranoia and let THEM win.
Come and get me ya dillholes...here I am. Just me and my legal MMJ paperwork... (bring some rolling papers though, I'm out)

It's hard to do that in all 50 states. Being legal would be nice, but it isn't protection to depend on. There are other threats than the dea.

A paranoid person can also surf the WWW using a thumbdrive based OS/Browser. That should leave zero history of page views on your computer.
