That's one of the reasons I run Linux Ubuntu primarily now. No need for bulky resource hogging AV. I still have multiple firewalls up with a clamav scanner running in the background. Of course, it helps not to have your ports wide open, lol.

keyunit, AVG is pretty good, I have used it and it is decent. The reason you've probably not heard of those programs, is because you're not running Linux. You switch to Linux and not only will it feel like a breath of fresh air, but you'll not want to go back to Windows, that's for sure.

Ok...as I'm not the most "cyber-wise" person on the boards, can someone suggest a good, SAFE file-sharing program (like Limewire) that I can go and download music from?

I had used Limewire, but when I saw the first post from Fatman I went in and deleted the program and anything related, along with running the lastest update of AdAware.

ISO, Limewire isn't bad, but it isn't as safe as some others IMHO.
What I would recommend that you do, is, goto:

and download the program, it's free, so no worries there.
Then, once you have it installed, you have two choices:
1. Use the utorrent client itself to search for music torrents
or
2. Open up Google, type <the name of song/album> filetype:torrent,
from the search result descriptions, you can usually tell which is what you want.
You then go to that site and download the torrent. There is usually instructions in plain view. Now in the preferences for either utorrent, your web browser, or your AV app to pre-scan a file before it is downloaded. This ensures that your system remains safe while you get what you want, lol.

Now I can't really go into more detail on how to set that up because I don't know the details of your system setup.

If you want to know more about torrents, then you should check out the wiki.
There are also some well known torrent sites that I will not list here, and I strongly suggest that no one else does, mainly because these sites are subject to ....negative attention. I sure don't want there names coming back to GP.

Now keep in mind, there are hundreds of torrent sites out there, so you have the freedom of anonymity. They don't require you to register, so you arent sharing any details.

Also, you need to look up:
Peerguardian
Tor
Privoxy
These are FREE and invaluable tools that will help protect your identity. Not just for torrents, but in other ways as well, in general.

Heck yeah Open Source and Penguins all day for me as well. I run Ubuntu in my lappy and a dual boot slackware/Kubuntu Desktop in my home office. Gotta love em. way more secure too.

One of the best ways (if not the best way) on protecting yourself from web pages that contain malware of any kind is to use HOSTS file.

Go to this url

Read what HOSTS file does and how to import it (dependent on the OS). Then copy and paste it into your system directory.

Repeat every few weeks as page is updated constantly.
