What programs do you "need"? There is a lot of 'replacement' stuff out there, just some of it ends up with really strange names sometimes.

Default "The Slack Man"

I first got broken into the world of Unix/Linux in 1991 in College.(too bad i didnt decide to take it till my Senoir year) Redhat was the S%$# back then but as years went by I began messing with different platform systems and modifying them to MY needs. I have been experimenting with many different Kernels but out of them all I am a dedicated Slackware guy. Sure my Lappy is a dual boot WinXP(tweaked) and Kubuntu OS but my Desktop is allllllllllllllll Slack and dam i love it and can just do so much more than any release of any Win OS. I have also found a love for Solaris Servers. As far as my Software most of the programs I wrote or modified pretty much myself. I dont have a ton of crap that I dont need and my Security is fantastic. Best part is. I have never yet to encounter a Virus one!
As far as a Drawing program I use a (modifiedLOL) QCAD program. I am a retired Tool and Die Maker and sure I was bred for the most part on AutoCAD releases but I now use QCAD and with my program mods I can draw up pretty much any 3Ds very easily. I enjoy it alot better than any of the Autodesk programs.
Nice thread i'm happy to see this at GP.
Now to answer the Question of if Linux is any better than Microsoft or Apple OSs. That is a question only the user can answer. FOR ME Linux is very safe and efficient not to forget ultra productive for me in anything I need to do weather its browsing, emailing, programming, hacking,
NOT, hehe., burning DVDs or CDs(FAST) Audio Mixing/Editing, and very fun Gaming. With some modifications WINE can be a Linux box gamers best friend.LOL
Peace and keep up the posting guys,
Med
