Rep Power: 81 | | Pre Paid Electricity Hiya All , i have been reading forums abuot security issues regarding electricity , but i have noticed most advice is on people who mainley have there bill every 3 months (every quarter) but what would be the issue regarding pre paid meters where you have to buy the electric at a shop with a key they goes into the meter as and when you need electric , would a large rise in a electric usage there for adding more money and using the key more , would that rise to much intrest from your a electric company than if you had your electric on every quarter payment system if that makes sence lol . as im from england some people might of not heard of pre paid meters or seen them . http://www.prepaidmeters.co.za/

"Prepaid Electricity"?
That's a new one on me. I would think that any extreme increase in electrical usage would trigger suspicion, no matter how it is billed.
I use about 2kwh more with my grow, than without it. Apparently, this is not enough to raise eyebrows at the utility office.

People use more electricity now a days anyway, the house where my friends band practices has at least 30,000watts of sound eqipment that they use when they practice it really shouldnt be that big of an issue especially if you live in a fairly populated city

I'm in the UK with a key meter (luckily, coz I hate paying a 3 month bill in one hit) but I think the use would have to increase dramatically to raise any interest from the electric company.
They soon know when people start bypassing meters & nick the electric though, grow room or not... |

Hi Shane can you do anything in your home to help offset the new increase in energy use? When we moved into this home every light bulb was incandescent. We switched them all over to CFL so this helps us save energy plus offset the energy usage of the grow. I am 100% legal but why do I want any bells going off at the utility. Legal and unknown is best. Not legal and unknown even better.

As long as you pay the bill, they do not care. ( Ask the shareholders ) Which reminds me; You could offset your cost by becoming a sharholder.
You can always switch utility suppliers, I recently changed from EON to EDF the electricity is half the price, gas is a little more.
Check out uSWITCH, they give a £15 cashback when you switch.
I'm UK & 600w HPS has increased my usage around 100% I take a reading before each grow
