In the USA for the last decade ADT has been marketing a system called the Simon (there have been periodic version changes). Anyway they have always given away a free system with a subscription so there are a lot of inactive systems in the craigslist world. Look for the PHOTO FIRE ALARM. It takes a picture of the air every 1.5 seconds, looking for common combustibles like paint, carpet, plastic, wood. get the whole system and find an installer to have it dial you. This is NOT as hard or unrealistic as it sounds. You could also having the motion alarms do the same. As long as you provide an ACTIVE phone line for the system to seize and dial out of it's just a matter of figuring out the wiring/programming.

So by having ADT install it for you, theyll call you as soon as it happens aka before the cops come? giving you a little time in advance?

NOOOO. not at all. the only thing an alarm system is doing is responding to specific stimuli-fire or motion for example, and then reacting by using it's active phone line to send a message to a monitoring station. By hooking up a properly affected system (one that would dial you and only you supposing you can figure out how) WITHOUT a subscription to ADT you would become that monitoring station via cell phone or some other mobile transmission/reception device. The only reason I mentioned an installer is because most of these guys are independent contractors and as long as you have the skills to present a proper cover, bribe or friendship this whole process might actually be (more) possible. Sorry, I intended this thread as a query and not a statement of fact.

Don't know if you can get it to just dial you or not...alot of construction contractors use them.

This is one of my first finds. No pricing info, you have to contact a sales person. If you look through the specs and go through some of the extended info it looks like this thing can handle multiple alarm inputs (fire, motion, etc) and be programmed only to contact a specific pager. You can also sync up with it (provided you buy all the gadgets) and control any automated systems via phone. Obviously this is wet dream setup kinda stuff, but if it can be done by them it can be done by us.

Interesting idea...and they really aren't all that expensive of a system. Check out a few of these as they are very affordable!
