Hey guys how's it going? I was wondering how safe it would be to start up a grow room in an additional bedroom in an apartment. I would like to rent a house but fear of the landlord coming in. I figure getting an apt with an additional bedroom would be a little more secure, but I was wondering if odors would be an issue? I was wanting to do possibly eight to maybe twelve or fourteen plants. I was planning on getting some sort of deoderizer, but thats alot of plants. What do you guys think about odor and such, or what might else I need be aware of? Thanks |

You will have to work hard on odour control and exhaust. All is possible. As you have been told, to your research and make sure you understand what you are doing before you take that risk. You do not want your plants stinking up your whole hallway or building. Caution, and take it slow.
Peace and Welcome to GreenPassion!

Personally, I would be more concerned about growing in an apartment than a rented house. They still have to give you the same notice before they enter your space, and I would figure a house would be easier to grow in than an apartment.. stink wise. Where are you living now?

Well I was planning on building a muffle box and using a carbon filter through the ventilation system, as well as a tiger deoderizer system, and exhaust fan. A house would be a much better place because of the space, but an apartment is more finacially feasible. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this sort of situation. We were planing on growing some white widow so the odor would be strong. I don't mind my hallway smelling in my place, I just dont want my neighbors to smell it.

I did a 6 plant grow in the closet in the bedroom of my apt once...it was ok, it smelled a little too much for my liking, which led to me having to cut the grow short...just go with a cab like justanotherbozo's and have odor control, that was my mistake. You have the whole room to work with so you should be good as long as you can control your air flow. I was only using 250watts though and a couple fans, how much wattage u planning to run?

We were wanting to use either two 600 hps or two 1k hps lamps. We figured one light for 4 - 6 plants. I honestly don't mind the smell in my place as I said, I just don't want the people around me knowing what's up =D I figure with a muffle box, carbon filter, exhaust fan, and then a odor control system we should be fine? The only thing that would be strange was the amount of power those lamps would be pulling. I have read alot though and it seems the only thing the electric company worries about is extreame changes from one year to another or something like that, so I figure if as soon as we get in there we turn on them big lamps it will just seem like we use alot of power?

Bro, To Start Off, I Don't Like To See People Growing On Rent Property, It Is A Huge Risk!!!,,,But If That Is What You Have To Deal With??,,I Would Do It In A House Build Grow Chamber's That Stand Alone, So You Can Use The Room For Air Exchange, & You Won't Need To Make Any Hole In The Wall's ect.. Also They Can Be Taken Down & Moved Easily & Fast. I Think A Apartment With Nosey Neighbors All Around Is Just Asking For Trouble!!
Best Of Luck, Wishes & Karma, & If You Need Some Help Figuring It Out??Just Holler..
Cheers`;`Hatch`;`

Find a small house in a less-travelled area. Seriously.
Power usage for 2 600''s may not draw any flags if YOU PAY YOUR BILL.
IMO...smell/vibration/noise/chance of leaks/damage to other units are your biggest worries in an apt grow. Even a broken pipe/leak that is UNASSOCIATED with a grow will bring the landlord in...without any/much notice if it is an emergency. Could be your pipe leaking down on the guy below...could be the guy above leaking on you. Either way...an apartment raises the chances of "shat happening" without a doubt. More eyes/noses/ears are troble in a (apartmrnt) grow..legal or not. (cops and rippers)
Figure out a way to nix the apt. if you can.

I agree 100%. The only apartment grow I would do is something on a micro scale and cfl or t-5s. Quote:

Find a fixer-upper....even to rent. Tell the landlord you have a sense of PRIDE and you want to help improve the place. Spend a few days working..painting/showing interest....then show the LL your work. (do a good job!)
We did this once....the guy was floored...gracious...and treated us with the utmos respect from then on as renters...never once did he want to come over/in to see what condition his place was in...and never did we have to moved the 2 bedroom out of 3 grow we had going on continuosly for about 5 years. he never raised the rent either!
places are out there. the economy is hitting LL's hard and they want good/long term tenants. Keep looking. It will happen for you if you want it to.

I agree with getting a home also... even with a home though your odor issue needs to be controlled. I personally wouldn't waste the time making your own filter it is for sure something you want to do right and spending the money on this particular part of the grow is a good idea. I got a phresh filter, its guaranteed for two years of continuous use and they make them small... mine is about a foot tall and eight or ten inches around with a four inch outlet. I hooked it up to the fan and you can't hardly smell anything even in the room with the door shut. I can't stress enough how important keeping your odor under control and your mouth shut is. don't tell anyone, especially girlfriends or buddy's who smoke. I rent a home and my landlord hasn't been in my home in two years. I don't call for fixes on stupid stuff and I fix things myself and don't charge him for it. If you have a good relationship with your LL and your property is well maintained then you should have no problems, just pay your bills on time. Good luck and keep us posted

Excelllent advice.
Phresh filters first came into the US as "Phat" Filters. these are definitely the best...lightest...longest lasting filters on the market. A 6" x 24" tall model is only about $160 and they are REFILLABLE. Just buff off the rivets, take the top off...replace the carbon...and put nuts/bolts back in place of the rivets. BAM....you're back in biz.
agreed...don't SKIMP on odor control.

High tech garden supply sells pretty cheap carbon filters. $50 for a 4" x 12" (as compared to Phat filters which is $75 for the same thing). get it with an inline fan (170cfm - a closet) $120. bigger size of course, not as many size selections as phat filters. 8" inline fan (590cfm) with large 8" x 24" carbon filter $259. that size can handle a 15x15x10 bedroom easy. hope this helps!

Took me over a year to find the right house to rent. I live in an MMJ legal state and was upfront with my LL. After a year now... she loves me. I pay the rent early and dependably, deal with problems myself, and take better care of the place than she did. Not only does this reflect well on me.... but on the next MMJ patient she may run across.
That being said... while looking, I did setup an apartment closet and was pretty happy with it. I use ION generators (not ozone) and I'm thrilled with the results, you just have to be careful not to turn them up to high or they can give you headaches or respiratory problems. At the right settings, they are awesome for neutralizing smell. Of course... my biggest problem was ventilation and being extremely limited in what I could do and the constant fear of my slum landlord company or my creepy neighbors diggin' around in the trash or peekin' around where they shouldn't.
Whatever you decide... best wishes. Here's a pic of my lil setup back then, for inspiration, but again... I'm far happier in a home with a basement.

Awesome! Great info guys. I really do appreciate all your help. I wish we could find a house with a basement but sadly where I live we have few basements. The inline fan and phat filter sound like a great combo. I'm searching around for a quiet fan =)

Rep Power: 0 | | Well I have 2 different options to share with you and I am going to reccommend you go with the first one. DO NOT DO THIS! Too many possibilities and legal access to your pad anytime. What happens if your gone and a pipe breaks and floods someone in an adjoining apt out or perhaps and Electrical problem ? They have the legal right to enter by any means to investigate and repair the problem. Number two is to not build/construct/destruct anything. Not good at all! Bout the only way I would even think that over is if you had it in your lease that you could make minor cosmetic alterations just remember the Landlord would probably want to see this after it is completed.???????? Now what you COULD think about is perhaps getting one of those grow tent setups.? I kinda question these things however with the air quality and climate control. Sure Odors can be cleaned up but that doesnt make it any more of a comfort zone if a problem arises that requires maintenance while your gone. Bottom line advice from just myself is dont risk it. Sorry man I just dont want to see anyone get got. Wait for it. Your security is the top priority my friend. Peace, Med
