Rep Power: 86 | | Buying timers solely based on price
Would they be something like these? 24-Hour Timer | First Alert | Walgreens
I always make sure the check the ratings on the timers and only get the higher rated ones. The timer I linked to from Walgreens will handle 7.2A / 850 watts. Personally I would not bother with it. Like my buddy always says "go big or go home" :-) With only a modest HID light and some accesories you could be maxing the timer out. I'm not sure how hard HID lighting is on timers.
I did a bit of checking and found this thread: Question on timers
I do not buy timers solely based on price. Do some research. It ain't worth burnin' a place down.
peace,
R

Ron,
Need a timer? Go here: Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices
I use those timers, and they have been rock-solid on performance for over a year now. 2 plug-in's, easy to set (best part..LOL) and are rated at 15A.
You'll pay $20+ for the same exact timer with a different name silkscreened on it at any grow shop and many home stores.

Hi ISO,
Thanks for chiming in with a known, good quality timer! I, of course, paid the full $20 and picked up one from Homedepot but it is splash proof and 15A rated as well. I do notice a loud click/spark on mine when the HID kicks in. I suspect the mechanical contacts are getting pitted from the 12/12 cycle.
peace,

Anyone suggest a timer that can handle a 1000w HID light?

You betchya! The one I listed, above.
A 1000W ballast will draw about 9.6 amps, if I recall. (I didn't do the math here, but that's damn close for most). So, that timer can handle 15 amps. Just plug only the light into it so you are only using 2/3 of it's rated capability.

ISO | Hey ISO,
WOW!! Great price on that timer. One quick question:
Can you set each outlet seperately or do both outlets have the same cycle? I'm thinking a large HID with a fan to run maybe 15 min after the light goes out to help cool things off. Thanks for the link, man!
Later,

Later, 4kaan4 | No, in this case the timer is set to run both outlets the same. My exhaust fan draws air though my lights, and it goes off when the lights go out. I keep a small exhaust fan running for circulation, and a oscillating fan running 24/7.
Right now my flower room has the lights shut off and is being used as a drying room...kinda odd, it's the first time my HPS's haven't fired up at night in a year..LOL!

I got a timer very much like the harbour frieght one, at wal-mart. Only one plug, and 10 amps, but only cost $4. I only have a 400watt light and 171 cfm fan on it.
