Rep Power: 162 | | Orchids for profit or what would you grow for profit to a flower store?
I'm getting to where I can soon take a break from growing cannabis (backup stash) but having a dead grow room is similar to a ghost town or a mother without a baby.
Has anyone considered Orchids for profit or what would you grow for profit too a flower store?
Or if I'm missing something by limiting it to flower stores?
I could have a 2nd passion for what I don't know.
I did get some coffee beans out of Canadian
They take 30-60 days to germinate
Thanks so much!

you need space for coffee. its a large tree.
orchids is good though quite a few prefer shade so a hps isnt right... tomatoes maybe? anything thats out of season and requires alot of sunlight is a pretty good option in my opinion. something like maybe violets? roses?
anyway i never really thought of it.
i did a bit of research and found this: Environmental and Cultural Strategies to Control Growth and Development of Floriculture Crops - MICHIGAN STATE UNIV
i guess orchids is all right then ... hehehe

I may reconsider orchids:
It normally takes 4 ‑ 6 months to raise seedlings to the point where they can be transplanted. It can take 4 ‑ 10 years for the seedlings to flower. |

So you definitely want a profit??? A hobby growing some plants that you like is the way I would go and if all turns into a profit all the better.. You obviously have a wonderful green thumb... Maybe go talk to some of these small florist shops and get some ideas.. I have always loved a house full of plants, It's nice you have the chance to to this,, Good luck and let us know what you decide and how it goes, I would like to know..

orchids arent really profitable unless on a large scale, since they are very sensitive and only flower once a year in most cases.
best bet for your setup is to grow plants like cannabis - tropical plants. Palms, bromiliads, ferns, even african violets. you already have the setup for tropical plants, so it will be easy on them in the environment. go to home depot and look at the inside garden section, you can get alot of ideas from there (and even get a few plants!)

Lumix,
It just so happens I have been growing orchids for 45 years. I still have my 1st orchid plant! I would not reccomend orchids, for one they prefer a greenhouse over artificial lighting, they need 70% humidity in the day, none at night, 55 F at night and 75-80 F in the day, yet never hotter. They don't like being 'forced' to bloom either. From seed to flower can take 7 to 11 years, cloning takes 4 to 5 years to flower and then competition from Hawaii and Florida will make it too costly to compete. You might try culinary herbs such as basil. Restaurants will pay top dollar for basil in the off season. Years ago I sold my basil for $7 a pound in the off season and $1.75 a pound in the summer. Now in the summer I grew 30,000 lbs. a season and in the greenhouse in the winter I'd be lucky to yield 30 lbs a month. Basil has many of the same requirments as marijuana yet needs less room per plant. Plus there's many varieties, lemon, lime, thai, several colors, etc. If you plan to market it, find your customers before planting one seed! That way it's sold before your 1st harvest.
If you need more info on growing basil indoors....write me.
Dave

Dave | OMG 7 to 11 years! No wonder I gave up that idea
You'll have the ultimate patience for the longest flowering Sativa's with that history of growing.
Thanks and Welcome!
