Rep Power: 134 | | My back hurts, I have dirt under my finger nails
Hello everyone, I recently moved to this small town and this is my first spring living here. I have always had a veggie garden in the past but, due to being disabled I haven't been able to do much in recent years.
I decided I was going to have a garden this year so, a few days ago I started carving one out of the backyard lawn.
I think it came out pretty good ! It is smaller than I first envisioned it becoming but, I watched the sun over a few days and marked off the most beneficial area. It ended up being around 10 feet by 10 feet.
I took some photo's of the process and thought I would share them with you.
The first photo is of the grass/weeds which I had to remove before doing anything. The second photo is after I had removed all the grass/weeds. The other two photo's are of the area after I created the sections/rows.
The two areas in the corners are where my pumpkin plants will grow. I have some seeds for a pure white pumpkin and I'm hoping to grow enough for this years Halloween. In between those two sections, I plants some Peas. The two rows behind the pumpkin patches are filled with 12 tomato plants. The third row and the terrace below it are planted with carrots, two different lettuce.
I hope it works out !

Hey ROM, I'd have more than a sore back if I did that LOL. Great thinkin , watching the path of the sun and it sure looks like a good start on a vegetable patch. Good job man.

Thanks ! Yes, I have approx. 10 inches of good grade topsoil, then there is a layer of sand below that. I painstakingly shook all the dirt from the clumps of grass, then created a compost pile out of all the grass/weeds and roots.
Under the pumpkins, I dug a hole and dumped a full bag of humus and manure, each.
Hopefully I can grow a few big enough to be used as Jack O' Lantern's.

Hi Richard,how are you.
You've done very nice job with your garden. I can fully appreciate the pain in your back as I finished digging my garden a few weeks ago. I go with shovel through my garden every year to refresh soil.I must say I quite like it, marking a new beginning there will be not much of veg there though, mostly herbs and grass of different type. For some reason we love grass.I'm also in the proces of constructing little zen garden. really tiny little one.I've always dreamt of having one so this year am going to do it. all post some pictures when it's finished.
all the best with your garden Richard | | The Following User Says Thank You to raf33 For This Useful Post: | |

no lumber left around?
it really takes only 4 fence posts, couple simple boards, hammer, nails and a saw to build these things - if you pass by a construction side where the pour concrete ask em for some old boards from that, then you don't even need to paint them and they are for free.

Besides, all this talk is only serving to detract from all my hard work and the PRIDE I have in accomplishing what I have.

You have done a fine job, Richard. It looks well dug, double dug and I know how hard that is.
You will do brilliantly.
Peace

Looking good Richard, I know the back breaking work, I'm doing a small garden this year pretty much as you are maybe a bit bigger, I've just been taking it slow with the digging and turning up the grown with fertile dirt, that way I don't hurt my body any more then it already is, but you know when all is said and done, eating those fresh sweet peas off the vine is well worth it all...Happy growing to ya
