Rep Power: 500 | | Alert: Small carrots and how they are made!!!! The following is information from a farmer, who grows and packages
carrots for IGA,
METRO, LOBLAWS, etc
The small ****tail (baby) carrots you buy in small plastic bags are
made using the larger crooked or
deformed carrots. They are put
through a machine, which cuts and shapes them into ****tail carrots,
most people probably know this already What you may not know and should
know is the following: Once the carrots are cut and shaped into
****tail carrots they are dipped in a solution of water and chlorine in
order to preserve them. This is the same chlorine used in your
pool. Since they do not have their skin or natural protective
covering, they give them a higher dose of chlorine.
You will notice that once you keep these carrots in your refrigerator
for a few days, a white covering will form on the carrots. This is the
chlorine, which resurfaces.
At what cost do we put our health at risk to have esthetically pleasing
vegetables?
Chlorine is a very well known carcinogen, which causes Cancer. I
thought this was worth passing on. Pass it on to as many people as
possible in hopes of informing them where these carrots come from and
how they are processed. | | The Following 5 Users Say Thank You to jangel For This Useful Post: | |

Our public water supply has been clorinated for 50+ years. I must be very lucky to be cancer-free.

I suppose it's better to be afraid of chlorine than dihydrogen monoxide. |

Thanks for that post jangel. No more little carrots for me! All Chlorine is bad for you to ingest but the food grade stuff is called NSF Bleach. Its does not carry the same pathogens that the pool chlorine does. The problem is that the pool stuff is cheaper and a lot easier to get. So to save money and time some citys and bussiness use the bad bleach and our health is what suffers.

Pool chlorine shouldn't contain pathogens. (In fact, we use chlorine to kill pathogens.) Chlorine Pool Page, chlorine in pools Effects of Chlorine on our Drinking Water
Fortunately, you can remove chlorine later, as we often do for our plants. (So we don't kill the beneficial microorganisms in our growing medium.) If you want to do that for yourself, go for it.

Thats the problem. Regular bleach is supposed to kill all the pathogens in the water according to some experts, but it actually carrys immunity destroying toxins into your organs. NSF Bleach is the only one that is safe for ingestion. Its a fact that the FDA knows about but does not release the info to the public. I know that you know how that crap works!

Chlorine really should kill pathogens, but it can, even from the articles I linked to, do serious damage to tissue.
It is supposed to be at something like 4ppm in your drinking water. But if you use a chlorine pool mix to clean your water, like I linked to, you aren't just getting chlorine. Also, doing that could run afoul of other EPA restrictions.
Also, the second article shows that even when chlorine works to kill pathogens, it can still leave other stuff behind. Trihalomethane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
And I'm not sure how much the FDA has to do with the whole procedure. The EPA regulates water quality in public ystems thanks to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) since before the 80's. The FDA is involved for bottled water though, which would include the stuff we buy from the store. Keller Heckman Packaging Site -Use of Additives in Drinking Water Is Subject to Third-Party Certification
NSF is a standard/certification.
But yeah, that was just a quick research dump.
