Default Dear Abby...(or whoever)

Dear Abby,

My daughter (age 17) has decided to use the handle of "Vicious Vixen" as a handle on a site.

I say the name is waayyy to "sexually charged", and she says I am the only one in the world that thinks that way.

Am I full of it, or is she a bit over-the-top with the innuendo?

Signed by...

Confused Dad

***************

This is REAL (my kid) and input would be appreciated. Am I full of it for not wanting my 17 yo daughter to use such a handle? Too protective? Of not enough?

Just wonderin...

Dear confused........
As a parent, (with one daughter and 2 boys) I always use to tease how she was going to become a nun when she grows up. However that was me just being playful.......

As your daughter is just being playful too. To her, the internet is make believe.

May I ask you a few questions?
How are her grades? Does she "usually" lie to you, or is she truthful?
Does she do her chores, her homework?

More to the point....... is she a good kid or not?

You my friend are not going to stop mother nature. Your child, is becoming a young lady now. Youung men do get her attention.

I raised 3 children all by myself, and I had one rule that has always worked for me....
Be honest, and keep your grades up, and you'll have your freedom.

Communication is key though, we always ate dinner together, and talked alot.
I hope this helps you to put it in it's proper perspective.

Very good advice. I have a 17yo daughter, too. I don't know what I did to deserve her. She is everything I wasn't. She gets great grades, helps out when asked, can carry on adult conversation, etc.
She is the star of my show. We are always honest with her, and she reciprocates.

Thanks Pappy, my oldest is only 16 and just bought his first car. a BMW.
At 14 he became a CNA, all on his own. He made almost 40k at 15 years old.
While doing this, he maintains good grades in school too.

He likes to wear his hair very long, what can I say to him....NO?
Of course not, he can do what he wants, because he is basically a very good kid that I am proud of. He is very active in wrestling and football too.

In his case, he's very focused on life, so I don't sweat the little things with him.
I also, tend to forget, and project myself onto him, but thats wrong, and I have learned to listen to him.

He has a g/f now too, and she spends the night here sometimes, and that had me up in arms, so I talked to the two of them, turns out she is a virgin. He dosent pressure her to have sex at all, and the two of them are very happy with this arrangement.

I just assumed that if she slept over, he would be doing the deed, but again, I was thinking what I would be doing! lol

I have absolutely no reason to think that he has lied to me either.
Peace

You both are very caring poeple, and luckyYou have raised them and now they have to deal with the world just like you did. If they are 17 and up all you can do is point out how you feel about there decisions. Now it's just like when they just started to crawl and there first steps. They will fall and get up and go again, they learn it's the world they are dealing with and they will choose what they want too.It sounds like they will do just fine Dads.Kids and young adults do thinks different than when we were there age.PEACE

A bit of background on my daughter...

She grew up living with her alcohoic mother for the 3-13 years. Her mom is a good gal, when sober, but drunk she's the meanest biatch on earth. I was up there every other weekend for almost 10 years (250 mi round trip) and did all I could to help along the way. Problem was, I couldn't get custody due to border issues (US and Canada). Very difficult and more $ than I had to fight a custody suit acros intl borders.

Her mom finally woke up and started rehab in 2003, and my daughter lived with us then, and 3 times since when her mom would go back to rehab. Mom was sober the last 2 years, and we all had high hopes she would stay that way..didn't, and last Sept. my daughter came to live her permanently or unitil she moves out after HS.

Sadly, I have not had the benefit of teaching her about life near as much as I could have, hence, it is tough for her to understand many things about other people.

This is a kid that basically raised herself for 10 years. She did OK without the guidance I only wish I could have had the chance to give her.

To make it all worse, I have -0- experience, first hand, at full time fatherhood. After becoming one in a hurry I can see I still knownn nothing...and my daughter knows it, and unfortunately has taken advantage of that many a time.

Nuff said...

Video: You are a lucky man, and your sons attitudes and life style are a testimony to your good parenting. Wish I had your depth of understanding of young folks...
