Question Overwatered seedlings?

I'm a little worried about some seedlings I have at the moment that are 8 days old.

Here is a group shot. Currently there is 5 Ak-48 and 5 Bubblelicious. The very small seedling in there is a silly error on my part, when transplanting I accidentally took off a few mil of the tap root which stunted the growth.

I'm seeing several things i'm worried about. One is the wavy, sort of twisted leaves, and the other is how some leaves are looking like a claw.

Here are a couple photo's of one plant that seems most effected. You can see the wavy kind of twisted leaves of the first single leafs, and the clawing going on with the second set. The leaves look a lot wider and larger than it seems here, I couldn't believe how fat they are.

Do they look ok for 8 days?

The seeds were started off in peat pellets, and then transplanted into a soil mix that has part Osmocote premium (the mix has slow release ferts), mixed with seed starter soil, and perlite. No other nutrients have been added. Not sure on the pot size, it is 13.5cm across the top of the pot though.

One thing is after reading about overwatering, I think that is what may be my problem? Which is bad because I had given them a good watering earlier in the day... and I dread to think how they'll look tomorrow if i've just made it worse...

What kind of lighting do you use ?
Do you have a fan blowing on them for circulating the air?

it looks like overwater to me, only a tad...they don't look bad....but no worries, they can recover on their own quite quickly, don't do anything else till they dry a bit.

Are you using any nutes or are there nutes in the soil...maybe too much nitrogen as well

Cheers for the replies

Shinninwind
I have them under a 400w hps at the moment, roughly 18 inches above the canopy.

I had a small problem on day 4, with the inner growth coming out purple. After some research it looked like it was caused by colder outside temps being blown onto the plants from the vent. Since then I turned that fan off which solved the purple growth. But tonight I decided to compromise and have the fan blowing more between the light and the plants, hopefully that will circulate the air and also remove some heat from the light. Temps at the moment are good, at around 70 - 75 with lights on, but bad at around 60 - 70 with lights off.

scott06

That's a relief. No watering for the next few days for sure, I just hope between now and then that they are not hurt too much.

My mistake I think stemmed from using the hps, which dries out the first few inches of the soil fairly quickly. What I reckon is the bottom of the pot is staying too wet, and I will try to leave it longer next time before I water. I should kick myself because I knew when lifting the pot that it must have had *some* water in it, but because the top was so dry I caved and gave them a good soaking.

The soil mix has slow release ferts, and no nutrients added by me. I just mixed in seed starter mix and perlite to hopefully make it a little less rich.

sounds like you have it all under control...please don't stress

RichardOwlMirror mentioned recently that some Perlite/Vermiculite comes with ferts...so watch out for that...I think he said miracle grow brand.

Sounds like you got a handle on things. Yes letting them dry out between waterings is a good thing.

Cool, ok staying relaxed. It would be nice to think I have a handle on it but i'm definitely a worrier.

Huh, I didn't know that about the perlite, I always assumed it was totally neutral. It's not miracle grow branded, just a no name perlite from the local hydro store. But i'll remember that.

I'm hopeful with the mix I have. The last grow worked very well and I don't remember adding any nutrients throughout the grow, yet the plants stayed nice and green, Different strains this time though so fingers crossed. Only thing i'd like to do is keep some bloom and a low nitrogen fert on hand during flowering, as that's when the slow release ferts seemed to stop providing.

Hello Noneinone, how are you. don't stress yourself too much over little problems. what you grow is a weed, it's natural born survivor. I tell you what I did. Some time ago I got myslef lovely white russian.it sprouted fine and seedlings were going strong.but I thought I would give them a bit of natural sun and left them one warm day outside...in balck pots...not covered...in full sun...and I boiled seedlings' roots...all of them...wow! ... I could tell cos 70% of leafs were dead...but still I managed to resurect them after a week of helping with rootjuice...they got back on track and rewarded me with splendid crop.so as I say....no panic...that plant can take a lot of our mistakes
btw.you have good strains, had the same grow about a year ago and there should be my grow journal somewhere on GP

Hey raf33

Oh yes that journal was my little bible for a while and one of the reasons why I started these two. I thought it was funny though because at the very end of the grow you promised a smoke report from the Bubblelicious but nothing eventuated, so I figured it must be pretty good :D :D

Lucky for us weed is a weed. Though I had a miserable last grow and out of a couple plants I ended up with about an eighth of popcorn bud. 99% my fault though so I can't complain, just glad it was bagseed. My brother in law seems to think a bad grow is always followed by a bumper crop, hope he's right

Here's a few photo's from several years ago using the same soil mix. Can't remember if it was White Rhino or NL#5xHaze, but it was a lovely smoke. Also the days before I found LST lol

Noneinone, thank you for this glad it helped you to pick strains
you are right I forgot to give smoke report but I must tell you I always find that types of reports a bit tricky. smoking is a very personal process and av never met two people who whould have the same experience smoking the same strain.so I suppose that's why I missed that bit.once more sorry.
AK was absolutely fantastic.that is a one hit stuff, will knock you down but in a positive way...not very creative though..hehehe...very lazy smoke
with BB is a different story...I smoked it in Amsterdam and I fell in love with it...that was like every thing I was doing then had a very very deep meaning...hehehehe you know what I mean...my god...I had a fantastic laugh....Unfortunaltelly I was unable to recreate the same effect at home...it was a very good smoke too but lacked that special touch...that some kind of deep narcotic trance...anyway, don't pay any attention to what I wrote about my experiences with smoking...I bet you'll love those little ladies you have all the best and good luck and thank you

Thanks for that too

I know what you mean about finding deep meaning in things. I had a magical adventure with weed and mushrooms that lead to a long sabbatical hehe

The AK-48 is kind of a given I guess, i've heard so many good reports that i'm looking forward to trying it.

But the Bubblelicious i'm hoping is something a little more special, even if it's not as potent. Just that type of high that has something to say, you know?

Have a good one Raf33. Maybe i'll get a few pictures up when i've got some bud and be able to give my own smoke report. After two years clean, I reckon anything would knock me out these days, yay for long breaks haha

Well, they all survived the night and have grown a little since yesterday. So pretty happy with that and will make sure they get a good dry period before the next water.

Leaves on some are still a little funky but I can live with that

New pics at day 9. Maybe i'll get another thread up for this when i'm more motivated lol

The AK-48's look pretty similar to the Bubblelicious at the moment, both have some varying leaf sizes but I wouldn't know that i'm growing two different strains really.

The stunted plant is coming along ok. Thought I lost it when some of the tap root came off.

Love the fat leaves This is one of the Bubblelicious plants.

Anyway thanks for stopping by

you dont want them to dry out too much just wait until you can push your finger into the soil and it feels dry for about an inch

Hey Mr.Moonbiscuit

The top soil is drying out pretty quickly under the hps, even say down to three inches, while I think the bottom of the pot is staying fairly moist.

Not sure what to do really. I've thought about covering the top of the pot with some stones or something similar and hoping it dries more evenly. Really need some cfl's, because at the moment I guess it's a toss up between the top half of the root drying out, or rotting the bottom half by staying wet...

Any ideas?

ok something you can do to help keep your soil evenly moist is put a layer of mulch on top of the soil, it pretty much acts like an insulator. also to get a better judge of how moist the soil is feel around the bottom where the drain holes are and poke up in there and feel, but in all just use your better judgement and im sure you will do fine.
