Default Increasing Trichomes, trichs, bud size

Some of what I am posting here might be debatable, or arguable, but I 've tried it, to test it. It proved true to me. I did not make any of this up, it is what I read and then tried. Some of it is old wives tales, from my old outdoor growing days but it works.
I grow in a walk in closet, in my spare bed room, and have done 7 grows in my house and a few at a freind's house. I have central heat and central air in my house, and I do NOT VENT for heat. I use CFLs and several FANS.
I noticed that using the same seed, same system, same nutrients, what a major difference I get when growing in CENTRAL HEAT in the winter, AND growing in CENTRAL AIR during the summer. BIG DIFFERENCE.

1, Of couse, simply, have HEALTHY plants. I'm a big believer in having MATURE plants too. It is not wise for human children to have babies, they develop slower, they have problems. Sort of like the first litter my young puppy dog has at a young age. It is just not wise or natural for children to have children, and to me, it is not wise for baby plants to make baby plants. So to increase yield and trichs, let those babies grow up first, before you start 12/12.

2, I get much more trichs if Flowering in an airconditioned cooled room. YEA, YEA, I know, I have read a hundred times that trichs are resin glands, made to protect the plant during a hot spell. That might be so, but with my own eyes, I have observed that I get a lot more trichs if I flower in a cooler room than If I flower in a warm room. I can not explain it, but I see it with my eyes. I can't explain how the tv remote works, but I know it works.

3, I believe in Catalysts and Stimulants, and I use and like a product called LIQUID KARMA. Mollasses, Like Liquid Karma, is popular in SOIL growing, for adding sugars and carbs to the mix.

4, I like a very high humdity in VEGGING mode, and I MIST frequently and also use a foilage weak nutrient spray during VEG. I use a cheap Walmart Cool Humidifier during VEG. BUT, during BLOOM or FLOWERING, I go to a very low humidity to increase Potency and Trichs.

5, IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS OF FLOWERING, Be Mean to them, tease, STRESS and agrevate them, frighten them, and make them think the Apocalypse is coming. Sound crazy? yea, I know, but I tried it on one plant and now I do it to all of them, the last ten days. It's hard to do to MY GIRLS after I named them, loved and nutured them. Let me explain the reasoning.
They already sense that they are about to reach the end of the rope, so to speak. All they know is try to GROW, or REPRODUCE. The theory is as they feel STRESSED, they think they must make more trichs, more resin, to get more stickier and to catch more male pollen stuck to them. Also to protect their leaves. TEN Days before HARVEST is the best time, so that they do NOT have time to go completely HERMIE on you.
How do I do it? How do I stress them?
On branches as big as a pencil, I grab and pinch the stem, I massage the branch in between my thumb and finger, rolling it back and forth, until the skin or bark is rubbing off the branch.
Also, on the same larger branches, I grab it with both hands, and twist it in two opposite directions, VERY SLIGHTLY tearing it inside, damaging the inside of the stem.
Stick a large sewing needle in the bottom of each branch, then remove it, where the branch enters the main trunk of the plant OR where a large branch leaves a larger branch.
In the bottom of the trunk, near where it enters the soil or water, stick a thumb tack in it and leave it.
Do extreme termperature changes. Normally, during October, when most outdoor growers harvest, the plants experience extreme hot days and then extreme cool days. The plant will think "OMG, I GOT TO MAKE MORE TRICHS!"
TURN UP THE FAN, and blow them hard for a short while.

I know some of this sounds extreme, but try it on one plant and see the difference. MOST important, do it during the last ten days before harvest.

Never thought of that! I take their nutes away (after overnuting them a little) and turn off the lights on them for the last 3 days but I never though of physical mayhem! I must devise the MC torture chamber! Think I'll lower the lights to increase the heat. The tack idea is good! Maybe I'll poke it with an old switch blade I have. Whip it, beat it, make it write bad checks! Get 'em all liquiored up on LK. Hey, this could be fun! Mine are about 2-3 weeks out and plumping nicely. Have the usual one monster, two regs and one runt. The runt dies if I run out of supply! I'll finish with a little flora kleen to remove any traces of my abuse! Then I'l cut them up in little pieces and dry their skins and smoke them for my enjoyment! Ok, getting a little freaky here. See what you started Roseman! LOL!

Couple of links y'all should really take a look at...

The first is a video by Marijuana Man, which accurately describes the cause-and-effects of UVB on the globular head of the trichome.

And although I disagree with a few of the techniques listed in the link below, (such as darkness before harvest) this should help guide your efforts in the right direction:

Trichomes and you

i do a couple of these things as well. also before harvest i usually mess with the light schedule a bit. put it down to 11 for the last few days, and sometime i put the plant in complete dark for a day or two then harvest. just make sure you dont do it too early and get hermies

I will have to keep some of those ideas in mind.
Here are a few unremarkable pics of my girls at ten days into flower.
Temp is 68F at night, and 75f during the day. I think they are growing fine, but it is my first indoor, and hydro grow.

The stressing part I found very interesting. It makes sense, but I probably would have never thought of it. Thanks very much for the insight!

Something I picked up in my studies I guess.

I've got 425watts of 2700k overhead, and just added another 170w to the front, if I need more than that to get good buds I guess I will just go outside.
I generate enough heat to cook dinner with. I probably use as much power in venting and circulation as I do in creating lumens.

One 400w HPS is capable of putting out about twice the growing power. Especially good for flowering. It's all about the lumen's.

Truer words were never spoken Zigzagman, but until I can gain access to an outside source for intake/exhaust I'm going to have to make do. This is my first indoor grow, and first with hydro also, but my initial impression is that a true "cabinet grow" with more than one plant, is no easy task. I'm also beginning to think that once you get enough lumens out of cfls, the amount of heat produced can't be that different.

Thanks MC,
Yes, they are all girls. I started with feminized seeds and so far have seen no hermie activity. I have three plants in one tank and two in the other. Four of the plants are Big Buddha Cheese, and one Kush plant. The kush is shorter then the cheese and I worry about it getting proper light.

Geez, Look at the size of those stalks! All that branching! I don't think you have much to worry about on the height issue on the Kush. Kush is pretty short but the Cheese is no giant. I little stretch will even them out. Just have to let nature takes it's course. I'm growing Barney' Blue Cheese and a strain called LSD. About 3 weeks into grow from fem seeds. I have 4 bagseed plants about 2 weeks to finish and I do the switcheroo about a week after I cut to give myself time for proper clean up and to work with and enjoy my harvest. That way I have 6-7 weeks of grow and they are full of grow tops when I send the to flower. I also have some Purple Kush in the line-up for later so our taste run similar!

Thanks again MC-

It does sound like are tastes are quite similar. The main stalk on those things are like billy clubs. I'm not too worried about there health, it just seems like a tight squeeze. I wish I would have put them into flower when they were 12" tall, I waited another week and they were 17" by then. This is by first indoor/hydro grow so I'm probably just being an overraught mother.

Why yes you are! I was too my first grow. I worried myself into doing stupid stuff. I like to experiment with plants. That's why I started growing indoors. The growth will be self limiting. If it gets too big for the pot it's in, it stops growing and gets to flowering. If you have any height issues, that's an easy problem to deal with. Lots of techniques that work. Just weigh the tops with something heavy for it's size or tie it down to a node lower on the plant. Piece of cake. It's a weed and hard to mess up! Have to admit though they become your babies in a big hurry. It's like having the grand kids in the next room playing!
