Question feminizing???

Just Curious, but does anyone know how exactly seed companies femenize seeds. I'm guessing maybe through genetics? I wish I could do this at home, I always have to murder about 60% of my hard work every year.

the most common method is to stress a female until it hermies and produces pollen...then use that pollen to fertalize a normal female....about a month ago or so there is an extended thread on this with notes on this and other methods...I wish I knew where it was, can anyone find it?

p.s. I get fem seeds...some of them are also better producers than the normal seeds....also some environmental factors are said to increase the female to male ratio...but I haven't seen any proof

What are all female seeds and how are they created?

Added by: administrator Last edited by: administrator Viewed: 476 times Rated by 10 users: 7.80/10Contributed by Mr.XX and TheSiliconMagician:

This is the strategy of Mr. XX, a Dutch breeder, for creating all female seedlines from slight hermaphroditic pollen. What he does is put the lights on 12/12 for 10 days. Then turns the lights on 24 hours, then 12/12 again for a few days, then back to 24 hours for a day, then 12/12 again for a few weeks.

If he does this and no hermaphrodites come up. He has found a 100% XX female that cannot go hermaprhoditic naturally. He says that your chances of finding a 100% XX female is vastly increased when using Indica genetics. He told me that the more Afghanni or Nepalese genetics the plant has, the better the chances of finding a natural XX female. His
exact words were "Where did mother nature give weed a home at originally?"

I tried to get him to narrow it down to a ratio, but he never specified just how many plants per are XX females his exact words are "plenty of XX girls for everybody" and that is all he will say on the subject. Only that it takes alot of time and alot of plants to find that one female.

He then uses Gibrellic acid. 30 centiliters of water with 0.02 grams of Gibrellic acid and 2 drops of Natruim Hydroxide to liquify the Gibrellic. Then applies as normal and creates the male flowers. He has gotten down to the 4th Generation with NO loss of vigor, NO genetic deficiencies and NO hermaphrodites. He claims that the plants are EXACT GENETIC CLONES of one another. Complete sisters. Basically it's clone from seed instead of from normal cloning methods.

info I gleened from Dutch Passion's site on using environmental factors to increase the number of female plants...specifically:
"From literature and our own findings it appears that the growth of a male or female plant from seed, except for the predisposition in the gender chromosomes, also depends on various environmental factors. The environmental factors that influence gender are:
  • a higher nitrogen concentration will give more females.
  • a higher potassium concentration will give more males.
  • a higher humidity will give more females.
  • a lower temperature will give more females.
  • more blue light will give more females.
  • Fewer hours of light will give more females.
It is important to start these changes at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks, before reverting to standard conditions."

Feminized seeds
How can I get my plants to produce femenized seeds?
There are two methods that I am familiar with; Light-Poisoning, and Gibberellic Acid Treatment, both forcing female plants to produce male flowers and pollinate themselves. I have employed both methods, and both have yielded satisfactory results.
NOTE: YOU MUST START WITH FEMALE SEEDS/CLONES TO ENSURE THAT THERE WILL BE NO MALE CHROMOSOMES PRESENT.
LIGHT-POISONING METHOD: During the first three weeks of flowering, turn the lights on for an hour during the middle of the dark period. That is, 12 hrs. on, 5.5 hrs. off, 1 hr. on, 5.5 hrs. off, and repeat for the first 3 weeks, after which you may return to the normal 12/12 light cycle. This causes a plant to go "hermie" and pollinate itself, as well as any other female in the room. You must use plants originating only from female seeds or clones to ensure that no male chromosomes are present. The resulting seeds will produce NO MALE PLANTS!

GIBBERELLIC ACID TREATMENT: Select your favorite female plant and spray it from approx. two feet away (first under the leaves, then on top). This must be done 2 weeks before the plant is put into the flowering light cycle, thus the need to start with female seeds/clones. DO NOT SMOKE BUD TREATED WITH GIBBERELLIC ACID! Spray the plant again after 2 weeks have passed, and place it under 12/12 lighting. This plant will "hermie" and pollinate itself and other females present. It will not produce as much pollen as a pure male, thus less seeds. However, these seeds will be 100% female.

CONCLUSION:
Now, femenized seeds have also been known to produce hermaphrodites. This is just an evolutionary safety precaution to ensure the survival of the species in the event of environmental catastrophe. All seeds have the potential to hermie. Variables such as pH levels, lighting scenarios, fertilizer problems, etc. will also be factors in the outcome of the plant's sex. Just keep 'em healthy, and give them your tender, loving care, and you should be fine.

and an old post from me

here is one organic at home method
http://www.420source.com/post/82

and a more chemically intence method ick! http://www.420source.com/post/21

and some ideas from wiki
[edit] Feminized seeds

It is possible to use a combination of cloning and "shocking" plants to get them to produce feminized seeds.[7] A clone will retain the same sex throughout its life, so if a female plant is cloned, its clone children will also be female, precluding reproduction.
While environmental stresses have been used to create pollen bearing male flowers on female plants- known as 'hermaphroditing' or 'hermying', this method is not preferred when creating feminized seeds; due to those plants most likely to revert to seed making being the ones which hermie soonest; hence passing on the genetic trait of instability of gender - desirable in the wild but not in cultivation.
Spraying selected leaves, branches and in cases where large amount of seed desired whole plants with colloidal silver solution has become a preferred method since the colloidal silver suppresses ethylene production in bud sites, stimulating male characteristics. Gibberellic acid has been used frequently; but is harder to find than colloidal silver, which involves nothing more than a small wall d.c. power supply and two pieces of solid silver jeweler's wire, or 99.999% silver coin. A method used by organic growers and promulgated by the famous Cannabis breeder Soma, is called 'Rodelization', or letting unpollenated female plants live several weeks longer than the normal harvest time. In such plants a hermaphroditic trait will self express in effort to continue the genetic line; the fact this method utilizes auto hermaphroditic traits which could contribute to instability in a plant's genetics is offset by grower observations that the tendency to auto-switch sex is not great in plants grown from seeds made this way, and the fact that it occurs naturally without effort on the part of the cultivator.
Another method of feminizing seeds is to get women's birth control pills which contain estrogen, grind them up and mix them with water. Soak the seeds in the water over night. Germinaate the seeds in the same solution.[citation needed]
The most common way to feminize seeds is to get a ripening banana which gives off the gas ethylene and leave it in a zip-lock bag with the seeds for fourteen days. (It increases the feminization of seeds up to 25%)

and from a seedbank I am happy with http://www.marijuana-seeds.nl/femini...ana-seeds.html
they give some hints about their process - I can see that some companies would choose to keep it semi-secret since fem seeds can cost twice as much or more - Feminized Marijuana Seeds
Want to be rid of those troublesome male plants Then try our All Female (Feminized) Marijuana Seeds! 100% female ratio!
Feminized Marijuana seeds represent the peak in quality and genetics of marijuana seeds. The seeds are difficult to produce but deliver optimum quality and all female plants. The seeds also produce very stable plants.
The evolution of seed production is apparent in these selections. Bred to produce 99.9% female "seed clones". These strains have proven themselves winners a thousand times over with discerning cultivators. Very well suited for indoor organic cultivation.
To produce the feminized Marijuana seeds, we start with selected female clones. Under standard conditions these female clones do not produce any male flowers. By the method we found, we are able to have these female clones produce abundant male flowers and pollen. The pollen thus produced we use for the production of our "feminized" seeds.

Easy Organic at Home Method RODELIZTION

Feminizing Seeds by Soma

Published at 2006-08-17 in Growing tips

Creating feminized seeds is an art, there are a few different methods of application. I have written about some of my different methods of making seeds in previous HIGH TIMES articles. I have use gibberellic acid, light stress, ph stress, and fertilizer stress to force my plants to make seeds. All these methods are harsh on the plants, and some like the gibbrellic acid, are not organic. In my search for cleaner more earth-friendly ways of working with the cannabis plant, I have found a new way to make feminized seeds.

Article by Soma
Feminized seeds occur as a result of stress, other than genetics. All cannabis plants can and will make male flowers under stress. Certain strains like a higher PH, some like a lower one. Some like a lot of food, some like a lot less. There is quite a lot of variety in marijuana genetics, and you cant treat every plant the same way.
It takes many harvests before you really get to know a particular strain. Just like getting to know human friends, it takes time. I have grown strains for a decade and am truly getting to know every nuance the different plants exhibit. I can recognize them from a distance. I must say that I get a lot of help from my friends, both in making seeds and learning new and better ways of working with this sacred plant.
I named this new method Rodelization after a friend who helped me realize and make use of this way of creating female seeds. After growing crop after crop of the same plant in the same conditions, I noticed that if I flowered the plants 10-14 days longer than usual, they would develop male bananas. A male banana is a very slight male flower on a female marijuana plant that is formed because of stress. Usually they do not let out any pollen early enough to make seeds, but they sometimes do. They are a built in safety factor so in case of sever conditions, the plant can make sure that the species is furthered.
To me a male banana is quite a beautiful thing. It has the potential of making all female seeds. Many growers out there have male banana phobia. They see one and have heart palpitations, they want to cut down the entire crop or at least take tweezers and pluck the little yellow emerging devices out. I call them Emergency Devices because they emerge at times of stress.
In the Rodelization method, the male banana is very valuable. After growing your female plant 10-14 days longer than usual, hang them up to dry, then carefully take them off the drying lines and inspect for bananas. Each and every banana should be removed and placed in a small bag labeled very accurately. These sealed bags can be placed in the fridge for one to two months and still remain potent.
For the second phase you need to already have a crop thats already 2 weeks into flowering. Take your sealed bag of pollen out of the fridge, and proceed to impregnate your new crop of females. To do this, you must first match the female plant and the pollen from the same strain in the previous crop. Shut down all the fans in the grow room. Then take a very fine paint brush, dip it in the bag of pollen, and paint it on the female flower. Do this to each different strain you have growing together. I have done it with ten different kinds in the same room with great success.
I use the lower flowers to make seeds, leaving the top colas seedless for smoking. This method takes time(two crops), but is completely organic and lets you have great quality smoke at the same time you make your female seeds. If youre one of those growers that has never grown seeds for fear of not having something good to smoke, you will love this method.
You can also use this pollen to make new female crosses by cross pollinating. The older females with the bananas can be brought into the room with the younger, un-pollinated females when they are three weeks into flowering. Turn all of the circulation fans on high, and the little bits of pollen will proceed to make it around the room. Do this for several days. Six to seven weeks later you will have ripe 100% female seeds; not nearly as many as a male plant would make, but enough to start over somewhere else with the same genetics.
As a farmer who has been forced to move his genetics far away from where they started, I know very well the value of seeds. My friend Adam from THSeeds in Amsterdam has a motto that I love to borrow these days: Drop seeds not bombs.

I made a clone Master Kush go male by stress, It was my most vigorous plant- I left for a week yet had someone else care for them, well when i got back it had outgrown every other plant by 2x its height and doubled in size, and it touched the light and it got burned about 7 nodes were destroyed, just shriveled up and dying- so i took the best looking ones the first 3 and cut right above the 4th node, those 3 thrived and caught up to the rest of the plants that had like 7-10 nodes within a couple of weeks, everything seemed fine until I left again for another week and when I came back they were balls on them, well anywho I tried to keep it alive and use it on some flowering plants to make some feminized seeds. hopefully out of losing that clone ill gain some new strains that could have a possibility of being vigorous like the MK but then again it could have the taste of the MK and the vigour of whatever else i crossed haha but here is something for someone who wants to make hermie a female plant a male- try this , grow a plant out 7-10 nodes and then cut it down to 3 nodes, see if makes it freak out and go male- ( and they were outdoor plants)

oh i crossed it with a bubble gum, a hindu skunk, a sour diesel, but who knows if that shit will take, i've never made seeds haha **** this was unexpected but whatever
