hi everyone,
I want to start a thread on this subject. breeding has become a growing fascination in this forum for some time now. our members have dabbled in it in the past. and since i've been here i know i have often urged people do do their own. hopefully i've convinced many of you to give it a try as i firmly believe the cutting edge of cannabis genetics lies in personal projects, where alot of dedication and love are put into great personal strains, full of new flavours and especially new and interesting genetics and backgrounds. after all diversity makes life so much more fun and interesting...
the success stories are out there, often gaining legendary status way before the leaches begin cashing in on the 'brand name'. strains like MTF, skunk, northern lights, california orange bud, haze... the list goes on and on. names we have come to enjoy and love. for all the right reasons, created by people like us. breeders often go unnoticed too, rarely getting the aknowledgement they deserve ...
enough of that. amateurs and professionals alike. i think, if your into breeding. its the love of the plant that draws you to it. and maybe the dream that you can build something sensational. as well as the personal pleasure of showing off your creations, a real ego trip when you succeed, hehehehe
so before we go into techniques, theories and ideas. before we begin to discuss the technicalities, sativas versus indicas, landraces and so forth, or even the validity of what i'm saying. i'd like to know from you guys, what does breeding cannabis mean to you?

Ileso being real new to this med mj for me to start to breed is very unlikely in any capacity that could provide anything back to the community. However after saying that I think what if at some point I have a male plant? I got lucky this time with all girls but I might like some seeds for the future.
So if that is considered breeding I guess that is my limited capacity so to speak.

Well a couple of weeks ago there was what I thought at the time was a waste of good plants. Yes a male in the garden way in the back that I did not catch in time. Lost three to seed. But once I thought about it I was glad. his stain was short and bushy the females where tall not so bushy. Both are two tokes and put it down. So I am kinda fired up on what the new seed has to offer me. Tall bushy? Better yields?

Not to rain on the parade 'er anyhting...
I certainly think making seeds for personal use/experimentation is AOK.
However...beyond that...if you do some (OK, ALOT) of reading and investigating you will find that "breeding' is in no uncertain terms merely finding a male in a pack of seeds and making more seeds. Such practices are haphazard, at best.
The practices of a "true" breeder....someone who might go though HUNDREDS of MALES/FEMALES to find the right one with the characteristics they desire... are far more involved than just chucking a bit of pollen on a female plant from a LONE male that may or may not have traits that you want to pass down the line to it's offspring (your "strain").
There are thousands of strains of cannabis out there that have been created...some by people who took the time to find the top-notch genetics in GREENHOUSES full of plants ...some that were copied from those same top-notch genetics and claimed as their own by others, and some that are plain crap that were made by folks who had no clue/business making seeds that other folks had to endure growing to find out they were total bunk.
just be careful...and if you do make seeds, please don't believe for a second that you are any sort of "breeder". Leave that tag to those who have spent a better part of their lifetime studying and furthering the plant, please! (aka..DON'T PEE IN THE GENE POOL)
ww (who has grown out FAR TOO many seeds that were claimed to be "the grail" by the seedmaker shine on!

By no means would I ever consider myself a breeder. But if I have two pretty good plants and what to try for sh**s and giggles to see if I can come up with a good plant why not. The one male I wish I had is the one I called stubby in my journal turned out to be 1 killer male. Wish I could of studded him out.
