i cut the plants as low as possible..trim away as much leaf as i can then hang upside down for a few days to a couple weeks...then when the buds start feeling crisp on the outside i move them to the next step which is trimming them off the stalks an manicuring them then i place them in brown paper sacks for a week or 2...then on to the mason jars for an indefinte amount of time....for the first month i continually check the buds 1 each day for mold mildew ish like that...if i do find mold i just go back one step if i got mold on the hanging then i cut the plants up an lay the buds on a screen in front of a fan for a week...peace 2

At the peak of trichome ripeness I cut every individual bud off, trim off all leaf, put it in a paper grocery bag, close the top and lay the bags on a top closet shelf. Every day I turn and open the bags and inspect the buds. When the moisture content is correct (1 to 5%) it is put in plastic containers/w lids and stacked in the bottom of the closet. Every week I inspect all of it to make sure there is no mold.
I dry to 1-5% because I am after long storage times. At that moisture content the bud cannot mold or mildew and will be as dry as dust so it must be handled carefully. Before the bud is smoked it is rehumidified to 8-15% moisture content so that it burns correctly and doesn't taste harsh.
Doing it this way eliminates most of the 'trichome coast' since it dries quickly but not too quickly.

i start with cutting em down, trim em well and then dry them for a few days - normally about a week. after a week they are usually dry enough to snap which is my sign to start to pack them in glass jars - those from ikea IKEA | Kitchen organizers | Jars, tins & food savers | SLOM | Jar with lid - they are great for the job!
there i do the usual routine for at least 2 month.

i chop and dry for 1 week then put in air lock tubs thease tubs you can squeez the lid to seal it they also have a lock on all for sides , these i found to be the best to cure in as the kilner jars arnt totaly air tight.
a good way to check if your cureing jars are air tight is to water test em if it leeks then it wont cure your bud properly .
i get i difrent smell and taste for each strain now i use the air locks well worth the $1.50 lol

The night before harvest I'll remove the plant from the flower room and set it in the veg room area (so I don't upset the flowering plants the next day entering to take it out).
First, I'll go over it and trim off all the fan leaves remaining.
Using a couple long and deep plastic pans, I'll cut each branch at the base of the stem, and trim off the individual branches from it into the tub/pan, then trim them one at a time of the balance of any unwanted leaves, etc. (not trimming the buds yet!) then set aside in a clean tub.
Next step is to change the trim collector pan out for a clean one that will gather all the bud trim...(the GOOD STUFF!). This is clean of any fan leaves, and is mostly covered with trichs...worthy of making some Class "A" hash out of!
I trim the buds while they are still on the branch in most cases, and then snip them off onto a drying screen from the Dry Closet. I'll set each bud in a spot to insure air moves all around it, and then set the tray in my drying closet for what is generally a 3-4 day period.
Then, when they are nice and air dry on the outside, I'll jar them up in vacuum jars. Open the jars at least 2 hrs. a day for the next few days. Sometimes I find I jarred it too early, and set it back in the closet for a few hrs...usually sufficient to get it back on track.
After several days of opening the jars for a couple hrs. daily, the bud is usually "just right"..if not, the curing continues. Here is the drying cabinet....
No complaints so far!

Even after the plant is cut the trichs will still mature for a few days as the plant dries out and dies. This period is called "trichome coast". It occurs for the same reason that clones can be made: cutting the plant does not kill it outright. The plant fully dies when it runs out of energy or water, whichever comes first.
