Rep Power: 265 | | Warming up the grow rooms
Now that winter is approaching (it's 38F outside now) the issue of warming the grow room when lights are off becomes a concern. I've even had problems keeping a reasonable temp in the grow rooms at night when it gets freakin cold out...temps want to run low 70's at best, and that is directly under the lights only at a time when there are 2 600W HPS and a 1000W HPS/MH running within 6 ft. of one another (wall in between, of course). That's 2200W of light power, and it still stays cold!
My rooms draw their air from the (as yet) unheated garage. Since my amp budget is about shot, I need to find a non-electrical solution that can warm a 20' X 30' space. I've been thinking of a kerosene heater like this one: 23,000 Btu Convection Kerosene Heater
I am wondering...do these create Co2? I can handle exhausting any fumes by cracking a window, and it would only (most likely) have to be run for an hour here and there to warm up the room and take the chill off. I would prefer the garage stay in the 50F range, better than 30's!
Anyone else using something like this? I am thinking of it pre-heating the ventalation air entering the rooms, and since I do all the mixing, etc. in the garage it would be a good thing if I can keep it from getting so damn cold in there!

Interesting idea. I would still have to vent it somewhere, wouldn't I?
With what I have in the flower room now (9) I am afraid that putting Co2 on top of them would grow them larger than the space will allow... That would be bad, as the lights can only cover so much. I am more worried about plant height under the lights, but that's another issue.
For the next grow there will be only 4 plants in DWC. I;ve been working way too many hrs. both with my business and out in the grow room, and the wife is getting a bit...pressing...me to spend some time elsewhere. With only 4 in buckets it will be easier to manage than the 9 from the last grow, and I want to learn Co2 usage with them.

i have bought me some time ago a honeywell electric heater with a frost guard function. that thing uses about 500W normally and is strong enough to heat a space of 10x5x8ft up to 75 at below 40 outside. got no fan in it so no extra noise source or something to break and burn.
bought the thing for 20 bucks or so -not more then that. cheap and good - and no fuels in it turning it into a molotov cocktail over night!! and you can controll it either with a timer or its own thermometer function.

Hey ISO I use one of those kerosene heater to heat a trail one time. They give off co2 and kerosene smell. That one there is one of the better ones.It will heat that space to around 50 or 55.Is the garage door and around the door some what sealed, it will do a good job.Heat the garage up and you are drawing the air from there. If you got the drafts sealed off you will be ok.Get two 5 gal cans for the kerosene sometimes they have a shortage. PEACE

There is a lot of different makes of mini space heaters out there. Look for one with a build in thermostat and you should be good..

I just bought an oil filled heater. On the lowest setting it is only pulling 600 watts. It will give me the little extra heat plus dry out the air and lower the humidity (the big reason).
The low never gets hot enough to be a fire hazard and these are very energy efficient.

Sounds like the hot ticket then!
If it gives off some Co2, all the better, but with the exhaust fans running and cooling the lights as they draw are through, I doubt the Co2 will be around the plants for long. Still, the warmth is worth the benefits! The garage is where I do all my water/nute mixing and build the "goodies" for the growing and gadgets.
Mogie: Had considered oil filled, and comparing costs, etc. this seems as an equal, and is also approved for indoor use (we have electric furnace and don't have a fireplace). I'm not going to invest in a propane decorative stove when we are going to move next year..rather save the $$ and put the stove in the new home, or better yet, in the nice big shop it's gonna have... I always wanted to build a place , and have room to breath while doing it.
Shaman, GreenN: I am at the end of my current amp budget, so can't spare the 500W worth of amperage to operate it, safely. the kerosene stove, once purchased, costs about .75 an hr. to operate, and it would only operate 2-3 hrs. a day to maintain a reasonable temp in the garage. Lights are on all night, with the 1kw light exhausting into the garage, as well.

Hey ISO, I was using a Delonghi Magnum (Del 2400 T) Oil filled radiator. This worked great, until I added another light. I then had to switch to somthing pulling less power. Then came the ProCom Vent free blue flame propane heater. This thing was easy to install. It is thermostat controlled so you don't have to be running out there all the time to shut it off or turn it on. I use a 40 lb tank inside the bldg so it isn't seen by nosey neighbors and I don,t have to change the tank to often. Temp stays at 75 degrees.and the plants love the co2. Northern Tool has them for under $100.00. 1-800-533-5545 for catalog. Home Depot sells them to.

Insulate, as much as possible, fill cracks. If you add up the area, of even small cracks you would be amazed how much area is actually open.

2 and half cents:
You could make a small insulated box to contain a small space heater.
Then have the intake for the grow room going into the box.
Just make it big enough that the heater is not a fire hazzard..
I would also put some sort of screen or filter over the air intakes.
Maybe just stockings.
