Rep Power: 0 | | Grow Closet:::Around $100 Hello All,
Well this is my attempt at growing some decent meds and I just wanted to share what I have done so far. This is my first attempt (excluding that ill-fated attempt in college), so I am still pretty much learning about this beautiful plant. Well anyways, down to business, here is what I used:
1. Five pieces of 1.5 inch rigid foam insulation (4'x2')
2. 2 inch metal duct tape
3. 6 CFL's (4 - 2400k and 2 - 5500k)
4. 1 Bathroom vanity w/ 3 light fixtures
5. 3 Y-Splitters (to split the light fixtures)
6. 1 -9" box fan
7. 4 hooks, 2-two foot lengths of chain
I think I attached the pics properly, so you should be able to see what I did. Not too bad for a Sunday afternoon if I do say so myself .
So yeah...thats it, fell free to leave a comment.

Looking Good, Ya What Are The Temps In There With The Light's Going???,,Look's Like You Need To Make What They Call A Dark-Light-Vent (it has baffles in it to block the light from getting in or out) For The Side Or At The Bottom In The Back, Then Make One For The Top With A Small Exhaust Fan In It..That Would Take Care Of The Air Exchange That Is Needed.
Well Best Of Luck, Wishes & Karma on Your Growing.
Cheers`;`Hatch`;`

Rep Power: 0 | | Thanks for the comments/suggestions. Yes, I realized pretty quickly that it gets HOT in there even with just those CFL's (I guess it IS insulation )....I'll have to work on that.... |

get a hole near the bottom large, and another on the roof or towards the top also large. the hot air will rise out the top and pull fresh air in through the bottom...

You need your passive air intake to be three times the size of your hot air exhaust. Read this for the theory and also check the DIY section to learn about a blind vent cover. The Knowledge Project ~Air exchange | | The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to jangel For This Useful Post: | |

Thanks Jangel, I am researching that now.
It was kind of a rough night last night. I have had TWO malfunctions so far!!! :-(
so in addition to the air flow issue, I have to figure out a way to mount my lights so that they wont continue to fall from the hooks onto my girls! I was basically using some 1 1/2 in. screw hooks and screwed them into the "roof" then glued and taped the s**t out of the hooks to provide support....not effective....
Any suggestions will be appreciated....

I'll be honest.. I would try to find something that is a little heavier construction and modify that. Search craigslist for an old dresser, cabinet or what ever. Look around your neighborhood on bulk trash day. At the very least.. I would get two Rubbermaid containers and make one of those bin style grows. People have had great success with them, and there is a ton of info on complete DIY.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.... | if the screwhooks are long enough to go all the way through the insulation then have them come through the top. get urself a BIG circumference washer and a nut. that should distribute the weight of the lights on a greater surface area.

What he said, sorry, but I agree. Whatever CAN fail on that WILL fail. It is just not stronge enough to be safe and you do not want your lights falling at any time. That is how fires start. Plus you have the ventilation issue so I do not know why you need such insulation. Even a wood box would work out stronger, and you get more air moving.
Sorry....

Hey DGT, get a piece of plywood or 1x4 and cut it to go from side to side across the top and screw your eye-hooks into it.The weight of the lights are pulling the eye-hooks through the foam is what I under stand and the wood across the top will fix it. Peace

what you could do is put a piece of wood all the way across the top, then,
anchor your lights through the foamboard and into the wood.
and take a look at the intakes on my bud box, something like that
would work for you as well although you'll need something to use
for an exhaust fan.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions. I have been out today getting a few supplies to modify this thing (trying to get this up and running while Im still on vacation). Ive seen alot of materials that would have been better to construct this thing out of, but because of financial restraints (and just plain ol' stubborness I guess) I will be proceeding w/ the insulation for this grow....hindsight is 20/20...
But RIGHT-ON tokecrazy and justanotherbozo !!! That's the plan that I came up with. I will be placing a 2x4 across the top on the inside and screwing it in from both sides to provide support for the lights. I also have a computer fan and some pvc piping to create proper airflow.
Wish me luck! Time to get down to business....
updates will follw

no screw the 2x4 on the outside. unless I'm just that high. Trust me I'm not. get a longer screw then the screws would have to pull the 2x4 through the Insulated box. if you put it on the inside it would be that much more weight pulling it down. Good Luck!

Rep Power: 0 | | quick update Well there wasnt any blood, a decent amount of sweat, and no tears, BUT I am learning SO MUCH from this experience...most importantly that I dont know ANYTHING lol.
Seriously though, I am glad that I began this grow, but I should have researched each step that I had in my mind BEFORE implementing that step, but that being said, to all the potential growers out there, JUST DO IT, plan, do your research and be SAFE
*sidenote: I destroyed a perfectly good computer fan because I didnt do my due diligence and research the wiring set up first
As you can see from the attached pictures, I have some reinforcement for my lights (those things aren't going anywhere), I've installed an exhaust fan (33cfm), intake vents, caulked all seams, and re-potted the girls.....
The Story of My Girls:
I started with 3 different strains of clones. Shiva Skunk, Hindu Kush x Skunk, and a mystery strain a friend gave me. When I first got the clones, I stuck them in a cabinet under ONE 2 foot t5 fluorescent. I had a vague plan of sticking them in another cabinet under a more powerful light at some point in the future...well, I soon ran into problems of wilted leaves on the Shiva Skunk girl, not knowing what to do, I put her outside 5-6 hrs a day in direct Cali sunshine....not a good idea, but I did this for about 3 or 4 days.....Long/boring story short, my girls are hanging in there, but not looking too good. As I said before, I have repotted them in 1 gallon buckets, plan on vegging for another 3 wks or so (they'll ultimately decide how long) then flower....
oh yeah, I need to get a better circulation fan for my grow space and I think my temps are running a lil high and my humidity a lil low??? Any suggestions/comments?
ps - the pictures of the Shiva and HK are mislabeled...reverse... | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
