Just some thoughts that others may wish to expand on
in their tutorials..
Outdoor: simple, the fewer visits the better.
hard to follow you if you don't go there..
I'm sure by now most outdoor growers know how to
use a video phone to find motion detectors and infrared
cameras.
Don't plant more than a few plants together to avoid
the 'neon green patch' as seen from the air.
Pepper/bear spray the F**k out of the approach to the plot,
including the trunks of trees up to shoulder hight.
Indoor: Smell will give away the most well hidden grow.
use-a-carbon-scrubber! Ya ya, you can use kitty litter,
and odor blocks et al. None, NONE! will do the job like carbon.
When it comes to electricity, DON'T GUESS.
If you don't know, ask. Close and almost are not good enough.
You will not get a second chance to F'up.
Don't order/have delivered anything to the actual grow address.
Good job Thothamon,This months topic is going to be difficult and some things will not be able to be shown.Safety and security are to important to bury at the back of the contest series.
.
My biggest fear is to come home to the fire truck.I am constantly turning the corner wiping my brow with relief.I have a fire extinquisher. Its out of date but charged properly and its A-B-C.
Something else I do often is check all my plugs and temporary wires. When its warm out and my a/c is running hard, I check the breaker and the circut for high temps. Not to hi-tech but I know when things are working properly theres no concern. Also, look beyond the prize when adding a new electrical component. Start new things up slowly by turning something else off and checking out your wires and circut.
If you going to use tools to build something, Wear some glasses, please. Most here are probibly old and wear them anyway
Keep your site clean and walkways clear so you dont get high and trip over stuff and never leave your spot unattended.Raise your lights if you do.
As far as security goes,I know who my friends are,I know my neihbors and feel lucky.I'm in a good situation. If anything were to change I would and do re-evaluate.so far its pro cultivate. If a bad storm comes thru I'll shut down and clean up.I watch around the hood for tree trimmers and utility workers.Constantly...
I have a small yard.I keep flowerbeds in the back where I can mill around and grow small garden plants and cultivate soil but I dont store anything in sight but tools. All pots are under something or in an old garbage can. Nutes are in the house hidden as well.
The safety and security of the grow site is paramount for a successful grow. To cover everything related to the subject would take a whole section in a library. For this reason I will attempt to highlight some of the most important and easiest ways to secure your grow from unwanted intruders and pests; by pests, I mean mostly the two legged variety. The best way to secure your grow site is reduce Accessibility and incorporate Camouflage. What we are really talking about is creating intruder deterrents. The more obstacles you place between you and a would be intruder the better your chances of keeping you and your grow safe and secure.
Let's look at Accessibility first. How easy is it for anyone to walk up to your grow site? If someone can walk around your yard and stumble upon your grow it is not very secure. The best way to prevent unwanted visitors in your garden is to place barriers in between them and your grow site. Notice the use of the plural form of the word barrier. One barrier is usually not enough; you should have several barriers and obstacles between potential wrong-doers and your crop.
The first barrier that we have installed is very low-tech; but efficient; a fence. We use a six foot high chain link fence. No Trespassing signs are posted at various places on the fence to make an impression that unwanted visitors aren't appreciated. This will discourage the most innocent of potential invaders, which will make up 99.99% of potential traffic.
The second barrier we use is a pack of dogs. Yes, I said a pack. Most people are afraid of one dog, but several dogs terrify most everyone with mischievous ideas.
As you might have noticed, there is not one Pitbull or Rottweiler in the picture. Each one of our dogs were rescued from either an animal shelter or someone that couldn't take care of their pet. If you are growing marijuana you should avoid using one of the more notorious breeds such as Pitbull, Rottweiler, German Shepard, Doberman Pincher, etc. All of which can raise red flags to neighbors and law enforcement that you are trying to conceal something. Besides some of these breeds will make it difficult to obtain home owners insurance from certain companies or may directly raise your premiums. Besides, you don't need a mean dog; you need a LOUD dog. All of our dogs have big barks. That's all you need. A Chihuahua has a big enough bark to alert the owner that someone is not where they should be.
Camouflage is the next barrier we use. It's the “out of sight, out of mind” philosophy incorporated. If people can't see your grow area they won't be interested in it. We use a “privacy fence” to conceal the operation.
Privacy fences do a wonderful job of keeping things private. No one knows what's behind it. There could be a jacuzzi, or a barbecue, or simply a table and chairs. That's the beauty, no one knows. And with it placed behind a cyclone fence and a yard full of dogs, no one really cares either.
The privacy fence does its job, but sometimes our plants grow taller than the fence. This can be a problem if people can view your plants as they peak over the fence. So plant lots of trees and shrubs in and around your yard. The extra foliage creates a visual barrier that prevents onlookers from noticing your very tall herb. I took the picture of the dogs from the street and the grow area is visible from that location. So check out the picture of the dogs by the fence again.
Can you pick it out? Can you see the plants that are taller than the fence? It is impossible because the walnut tree and plum tree completely obscure the view of the area from all vantage points from the street.
Home Defense
After creating an environment that discourages intruders, it is now time to think about what you need once an intruder makes it past all the obstacles and into your grow area or home.
Notice that in this next picture gravel is placed under the grow pots. The gravel serves several purposes. The rock is warmed by the sun in the day and will radiate heat during cold nights. It will help prevent frost on a cold autumn night when your late bloomers are finishing. The gravel also makes it easy to move the heavy 25 gallon pots. By lifting up on one side of the pot, the gravel acts like marbles when dragging the plant to a new location. Gravel is better than dirt because it tends not to be infested with pests as does soil. But most importantly, it serves as a first alert system against intruders. Our grow area happens to be just outside our bedroom window where we sleep. The dogs sleep on the floor next to the bed. We open the windows to let the cool summer night air in, and it smells so sweet in autumn when the flowers are heavy. It is impossible to walk around in the grow area without alerting the dogs because each step the intruder takes on the gravel is sounding an alarm to the dogs. As soon as the intruder takes one step on the gravel I guarantee there will be three dogs at the window barking with a ferocious volume that would wake the dead.
Now most medical marijuana patients tend to have larger quantities of herb on hand in their homes. This fact makes them a target for mischievous evil-doers. A pound of herb on the street is worth enough to temp any disrespecting thief. So the target of the intruder may not be your immature garden, but your cured and ready to sell herb. This means your home is vulnerable to house invasion. The best home defense device, bar none, is a sawed off pump shot gun. Keep it close to the bed. If an intruder makes it into your home, grab it and rack a round into the chamber. The sound of a pump shotgun action is the most distinct and recognizable sound on the planet to an intruder. If that sound alone does not send the thief running for the hills then by all means... pull the trigger and aim for the chest. If that intruder is not frightened off by that sound, he is crazy and there is no telling what an insane person might do.
The shotgun in the picture is legal. It is cut off at 18½ inches long. The pistol grip makes it easy to maneuver in close quarters. It is loaded with double ought buck shot. That means with every pull of the trigger you are firing off nine .38 caliber sized balls. It is very lethal, making it the perfect last defense weapon. Even the most passive and peaceful people among us will have to admit that there comes a time when lethal force is not only justified but necessary for survival. An intruder that does not leave once a shell is racked into this weapon is either stupid or deaf.
More Security Stuff to think about
On page 9 of Jorge Cervantes book “Jorge Rx,” is a list of the top 13 ways grow rooms are discovered.
Here they are:
1.Snitch turns you in
2.Burglary
3.Fire
4.Odors leak outside
5.Water leaks outside house / apartment / room
6.Weird trash – soil, grow stuff and supplies
7.Fan noise
8.Suspicious traffic at odd hours
9.Dreadlocks, hippy clothing
10.Loose lips and business practices
11.Outdoor crops near grow room
12.Carrying too much stuff in and out
13.Loud parties
Mentioned on the same page, but not listed, is an excessively high electric bill, frequenting other grow rooms, being outspoken and politically active in legalization movements, pissing off cops and ordering grow merchandise via UPS that is sent to the grow location.
UPS cooperates with law enforcement allowing them to go over their documents looking for suspicious purchases. It is a good idea to purchase your grow supplies from a company that uses a different shipping company and avoid using credit or debit cards in doing so. PayPal is not a good idea either. Use a money order or prepaid credit card. It may take longer but the added security is worth it. Even if you have a license to grow legally in your state, remember the federal government at this point does not care about state laws concerning medicinal use of marijuana.
Here is more good stuff from Jorge's book:
Never leave a paper trail that leads to you. Do not order grow equipment with your credit card and have it shipped to the address where growing is taking place. Always send a money order and have the equipment sent to a “safe” address.
Send e-mails via a “safe” connection that cannot be traced back to you. Once e-mail has been sent or received, delete all traces of it on the computer.
Never throw away grow related garbage, including soil, rockwool, information, stems or seeds in your garbage can. Police can legally check your garbage for “evidence” to obtain a search warrant.
Do not go to a “grow store” in your own vehicle.
Do not trade clones or seeds with anybody in the “land of the free.”
If you live in an apartment, be aware that many apartment managers are required by law to attend a class on how to spot suspicious activity. The class is aimed squarely at small, personal use, marijuana growers.

Heh, Where I live, that shotgun would get you more time
then the grow.
Hmmm, My entry is centered around the idea the reader is legally licensed to grow and has not lost their 2nd amendment rights, or do not have accessibility to them.

Ahh, well there is a whole planet out there besides our good ol' USofA,
and all I was pointing out was, legal grow or not, most countries do/will
take a harder view of the weapon than the actual grow.
Hi HookerRoad,
Great post! An easy to follow read and pictures! I really like those ideas you mentioned here. Actually I am adding tomorrow two sings to my fence "Beware of the dog", and I will add a second dog who will be the noisy one (I currently have a fierce German shepperd *****). I have several signs of the alarm company (that I disconnected, of course, but from time to time I let the alarm sounds for a couple of minutes, and my neighbors believe I have alarm, and generally people who have grows do not have alarm at home)
Once again, thanks for sharing your knowledge
Peace

Unfortunately this is true. Even in the US it is legal to own firearms... but just not quite as legal to use them. Way too many rules for when you can legally defend yourself. Shooting them in the back or in your yard is a no, no. You got to get them head on and in the house.
You are better off just letting them steal an illegal grow, I suppose. It's hard to claim self-defense if the crop you are protecting is illegal. This is why GreenPassion can only endorse "LEGAL" grows. We in no way want to encourage illegal activity, but our desire is to see behavior that should be legal, made legal, regardless of which country you are from.

What up.Ok so.Here's the skinny on my biggest most stealth grow to date. The plan was fifteen hundred plants out door. We started making mothers back around halloween when my partners and I began growing a sick strain we found by accident. We grew fifteen plants to be used as mothers for our project.(Berlyn and sugar shack.)We stashed our grow room in a secret room in the basment of our house. Our air intake/outake is hidden from outside view by a normal every object that i cannot disclose for saftey reasons sorry!
We have a fiv foot tall carbon can wich is the heart of our outake system. This allows me to grow all year without my neighbours ever knowing.
The door to the grow room is a steal door with no trim or handles so it sits flush with the wall. The reason for this is because we move a large shelving unit infront of it.No person outside this household has ever set foot inside this room!!!
The room was powered by a single 1000watt hps two 600watt hps and a 400watt hps.We have five fans atleast. We grew all plants in dirt.
Nows it gets a little hairy from this point on.
We needed more room as we progressed on making more mother plants.
We stopped bring people over to the house all winter so we could build another very large temperary room.Around April we started making our last batch of mothers. We were set.Fourty five or so mother plants ready for "the clone warz".lol.We cloned the **** outta thos plants making us two hundred and sixty plants in verious sizes and hights. We had Berlyn, sugar shack some auto flowering plants and plants grown from seed that i got from a freind.(he says they were bought from dutch passion but forgets what strain.
The day has finally come to move our girls out to the camp.
We get up two hours before sunlight pack up all three trucks and one trailer with all but three plants....to tall to make the all day trip into knowhere.
We drive way off into the mt's down old roads and trails untill we got to our prebuilt trail. We then carried all the plants up a hill and into the tree's where a stealth trail began. We had a homemade twowheel trailer and two wheelbarrols. We pulled all day down our trail we blazed through some of the thickest blowdown i've ever had to hike through. After moving plants all day we get all the clones and seedlings to our first stop.CAMP.aww what a rest. Some food, beer a few doobies and some sleep and we were up again with the sun.Now its time to move on.We move all our gear and wagons and such across the lake by canoes. One guy takes plants to the canoe. The other runs the canoes and droppes them off on the other side of the lake where i start to hall them with my wagon.
Again it takes it us all day to get all the plants and gear to our site.We spend most of the night moving our plants down the bank to their final resting place. We found a nice little meadow with a pond fed by a stream that used to house beaver but the beaver has long moved on to god knows where. We plant all our huge babes ontop of the beaver dams were we found natural clean dirt. The rest of the plants get plants in the surrounding area's near water. Most of them are in some moist like dirt that seams to never need watering.risky yes but it worked so far. After having everyone of our girls planted we hike back to camp and deactivate our trail moving logs, sticks, trees an rocks all over it half way down. Then building it off into the wrong way.We know that their will be no logging in this area because the logging industry has died and left the only company in the area banckrupt. It is very seldom to see a plane overhead and never once have we seen a heli.We bring huskies with us when visiting to help keep animals like deer elk and bears away.I keep a machette and bear spray for protection from attack since i am in the b.c mt's.Cougars, bears, wolves, coyottes, wolverines all stick to them selves but you still can surprise them by mistake. Now.Our camp is an hour hike through blowdown and has no plants, ferts,or propagation equipment is ever kept at camp.We almost never use the camp and we are very surtain that if anyone ever stumbles across our camp that they will leave as easy as they find it.The lake has no fish and the only close road is a dead end.Our plants mostly grow short hiding them in amoungst the bush already over running the area. The pond reeks of thick mud backing in the run annd mint and wild cabbage grow everywhere theirs not plants or water! We leave no trails,no garbage no shovels or evidenve behind when leaving.
The auto flowering are nearly done and we sure the others are no to far off but some will take most of the summer.Bug spray is a must.
The only way i would have improved this op would be to rig up some sorta self watering system or drip system.we've thought of hooking up drill pumps to soaker lines but figure it would be to hard and have to much mantiance. All of our trimming and drying will be done out their on site so we dont have to travel with raw plants.Check out my pics and give me some comments and let me know how you think i could have made it better.Take in account i do live in a remote part of B.C.
Peace

Another insanity, if the politicians would be so damned afraid of their own voters they wouldn't be so worried about us owning firearms. It is the same question of power as with pot, they want total control over our bodies by the Gov - they tell us what to eat, think, read, dress, do business, how to raise your children - leave alone their education. Fact is that who is banned from bearing arms is nothing else but a slave to the ruling elite, a small criminal minority that missed that they are not to rule but to serve their nation.

Looks like this one is a little slow.. figured it would be.
A few other things for the rookie indoor grower;
NEVER use any power or extension cord that has been kinked.
NEVER use a extension cord without a ground wire(3rd prong).
Solder when possible.
Brush-on electrical tape, waterproof, get it!
DraftStop Caulking, magic, get it!
Turn off breaker to the outlet(s) that will supply the lamp(s),
remove faceplate, vacuum the cavity, inspect and tighten all
connections.
Vacuum/clean all exaust vent lines after every run.
If it has a screw/nut/bolt or any other type of fastener,
check regularly.
Feel free to jump in people, when it comes to safety,
every tidbit helps.
can I say tidbit on TV?
