Default Reservior Size

im building a set up using 5x5 plastic fence posts. I'll drill 4"
' holes to set net cups in. Im going to use a drip system for feeding. This planter will hold 4 plants. My space is limited so I like to know what would be the smallest size reservior I could use so my plants get enough nutes?

Hey, welcome to GP man, sounds interesting.
One thread that you might want to check out is one being done by one of our mods, tokecrazy, he uses huge pvc pipe for a resevoir. So, it may give you some ideas.

Yea, thats real close to what Im doing, only smaller. They use a 27gl. tote, thats to big for what Im doing. What would be the smallest nute tank I could have and still get the proper amount of nutes to my 4 plants?

I'm no hydro guy, I've only played with it for a bit, but you may want to drop tokecrazy a PM. I'm sure he would be all too happy to help you out.
Peace

Fman,

The larger the res. the easier it is to stabilize the Ph and ppm's, so you want to go with as big as you can, if at all possible. For 4 plants in a drip system I would think a 10 gal res would be sufficient, assuming any overflow returns to the res.

Will you be able to keep an eye on the ph of the res.?

Rather than a bucket, check Lowes or WalMart for a 10 gal tub. Dark blue, light blue will work. About $5.00, and has a lid too to keep light, and unwanted crawlers out.

Hello Fman, welcome to GP.You say 4 plants in a pvc fence post. How long is this fence post and the inside depth and width. This has alot to do with the size of the res.How big of a area are you putting the 4 plants in? To take care of 4 plants and have a stable nutr in the res.I would get a 20 gal tub from homedepot. They cost $12.00 and are heavy duty. You can fill it with 15 gals and that's about 3 or 4 inches from the top.A 5 gal bucket is 5 gals all the way to the top. With 10 or 15 gals 4 plants will grow nicely and you will not have to change for 10 to 14 days.Bigger the res the easyer it is to run.Now with all that said do you have a PH meter and a TDS meter? You will need both to grow in hydro.PH meter to read the ph of the water and tds to read the PPM's{parts per millon}.If you need more just hollar. PEACE

Guys , Thanks for your input. This is not my first grow, but this is my first time using hydro. My floor space is sort of limited. Im going to do a 2 week rotation type grow, so I have to build 4 of these planters, acually 5, but my mother planter is already done and working. The grow space is 4'x3', but the floor space underneath the planters will only be 3'x3'. I do have some vertical space. My room is 7' tall. The planters will be approx. 20 to 24 off the floor. I was thinking about using the same totes i used for the mothers and stacking them 2 on 2, but I think that will be a hassel to clean and change the nutes. I need something tall and skinny. Im going to look at, (for) maybe some kind of small waste basket or trash can. I think rubbermaid makes a 8 gallon one. Ill just have to moniter everything all the time. Whatever I do I better get off my butt, my mothers are ready to give clones.
