Default Poor Guy's Rain Water Collection

I am planning on getting an actual 40 gallon collection barrel and modify the downspout, but until then, I do it this way. When it's raining, gently, this works for a few gallons over a couple hours.
I put the coffee filter in the funnel, then the red cup (with hole in bottom) holds the filter from sliding down the funnel.

Pappy, you got newer downspouts than I got...if I collect water that way it's all green and shitty lookin'.

So, I just wait for the gutter to back up (doesn't take long..LOL) and then set my 5 gal buckets out where it's pouring over the edge. I've gotten as much as 40 gal in 30 min...

I filter that though a paper towel inside a 6" net basket, from there to the 40 gal. res with the airstones running in it.

Best water you can get..mine Ph's at 7.2 (generally) and is -0- PPM.

This is great stuff.... I have been telling my wife for years what we need to do, gutter running into 2 55gal plastic drums at each back yard corner of the house, what you do with it from there is your call. I have lots of veggis and landsacping that I do would be great for that as well as indoor use... Here in the eastern lower 48's I could keep those 55gal's full weekly and that is with watering everything I have...

Green is the only way to go..

Sock,

Saving it in the 55 gal drums is a good idea, but you might want to add a airstone to it too. Adding that extra air can extend the usable life of the water, and help keep some of the algae down.

I never save more than 40-50 gal, unless that is I need a 30 gal. res change, and then I'll save up to 80 gal., as it doesn't sit around and get nasty before use. I store it in 30 gal tubs that have at least 2 airstones in each.

I awoke this morning to a very gentle sprinkling. Not much, but I got about 5 gallons. I like using the rain water instead of buying water. I go through about 12 - 15 gallons a week. It is still only $.25 per gallon, but like everything else, it will probably go up, soon.

So true... Also some sort of pump to be able to run a small hose off of for landscaping needs..
