Rep Power: 54 | | only 65 watts of HPS
i found a new 65 watt HPS light fixture in my pat complex trash... i love to recycle. im guessing some one tried to grow with it with little luck. i was thinking of either a 14 by 14 or 16 by 16 grow chamber tall and skinny. with cfl suplements and T5's virtically maybe 2 per side or make the grow cab an octagon and 1 or 2 per side... masive airflow from in the bottom shot out the top... the size could get a little bigger so the T5's can fit but i want the SQ footage as low as possible to trap in all the HPS light i can. i know its a super small light but i got it for free... any thoughts?

Sounds good.T-5 and cfl suppliments along with the hps?Your going to need some serious ventilation and possibly cooling. You will want to be bigger than 14"sq.Thats pretty tight.
Keep us posted

Keep us posted | yea i was sure i would need heavy vents. but my whole thought process useful out of it. but if i do add the T5's i might need to make it bigger like you said.
any ideas on whether i should make an octagon cab or a square one? would a slightly larger octagon one be more efficient?

Yeah Zuke ,An octagon cab would be good especialy if you put the t-5's on the sides. Good technique, Are you just growing one plant? Smoke runs out fast you know?

Smoke runs out fast you know? | this would in no way be my primary setup. i just really fell in love with this lil 65 watt HPS when i found it. and want to make a cab to grow one plant medium to tall heights. maybe a project where i prune to produce one super cola. a donky d*** as ive loveingly come to call them.
yea 8 sides either on T5 on each side or 2 on 4 sides... do thay make one tube fixtures?
i also was thinking of a square cab 6 ft tall just wide enough for a gang of 4 t5 lights on each side with my 65 watt hps in there... just ideas now. but im quickly falling in love with the idea of the octagon.

I looked up single bub 48" t5 strips for you and they look to be about 30$ish a piece. So the floros alone would run you like 240$ I personally would love to see the single bud that i'm sure would be insane in that small of a space but it certainly doesn't seem cost effective.
But i wanna see you do it just for the novelty value.

My understanding is that some t8 and t12 bulbs and ballasts are interchangable but i think t5 is just t5. I run some 34" tt96's in a cabinet with remote ballasts and they work quite well but are a little more expensive then t5's.
For as small of a footprint as your planning i think you would do well with just about anything you decide to use. It's not like you need the light to travel far and your plan would be nearly 360 degrees of lighting.
I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I can't wait to see what you come up with. | it will be fun to see what kinda contraption i can come up with to totaly 100% pamper one plant.

indeed it does sound cool. I would suggest you move alot of air through there for all the stuff. If stealth is not an issue maybe just an open top or perhaps a large hole with a fan.
In the last cab i put together i found that by putting a grate on the floor and using an active intake ducted into the space under the grate and the plants combined with a blower exhausting hot air from the top was enough to create a fairly even updraft carrying the heat away quite nicely.
Many people, myself once included underestimate just how much heat floros can put out. Even low wattage cfl's in decent quantitys can put out a good bit of heat. If you are comfortable enough with electricity to rewire them to be remote ballast the heat becomes much less of a problem.

im relly in to the idea to make a single plant grow cab i can use it for the mommy. and once she is at max hight ill flower her. then make another mommy. since only one plant fits in there it wont be hard to have a place to flower a tall mommy.

Yeah i have an out of control huge mother myself. It has more branches then i can count and has to be 3'-4' tall and afew feet wide aswell. I am hoping to find a good place to put it outside but it is a very dark purple strain and i don't know how stealthy a purple plant would be outside.

actually if you put it in the shadowy areas of forest it blends in very well. i think your biggest problem would be stealth moving.
