Rep Power: 500 | | Need Equipment - Where's the best deal?
Hi folks, I'm looking for a couple of pieces of equipment. I need a good pH meter, a PPM meter and a decent R/O water filter.
My question is simple enough. Where can I get good stuff at a good price?

honestly Michael, I would suggest you contact HidHut and actually call their 800# and talk to Justin. Tell him you are a member here, that you grow for med users and listen to what he has to say. He is a good guy, and will not lead you wrong.
Also, talk to toke and get his referral as to brand etc and see what he has to say. He might know some place to get a good deal as well. And he definately knows what are the best brands to invest in.
Peace

Great!! Thanks, Jangel.
I'm gonna go ahead and get ripped off at the hydro store on a pH meter. It's too important to wait. The rest can wait until I can afford it at the right price.

personally i use htg-supply.com. they are always nice to me, sometimes giving me free shipping on big orders, and have excellent customer service with broken equipment (my CoolTube came broken and they sent me a new one!). Hidhut is good too, i have used them. But once you add the prices (including shipping - which is usually cheaper for me on High Tech Garden Supply), the price is usually best with HTG. They also have eBay auctions where you can get many items cheaper than the store too. High Tech Garden Supply
I am in no way associated with HTG, nor are we sponsored by them on this site. I am simply used them many times, and in comparison to many other sites (including the HidHut that sponsors us at this site), HTG is usually a few bucks cheaper with faster shipping and customer service. Granted, I havent had to deal with all the others customer service, also shipping may be cheaper for me based on my location (east coast). just letting ya know what i use
*edit* I have this pH pen. Its cheap but it works, and comes with the testing solution and the tool to adjust the pen if the sensor gets off a little. http://cgi.ebay.com/Pen-Type-pH-Mete...3%3A1|294%3A50

I bought this one about two months ago. http://www.hidhut.com/catalog/oakton...ure-p-581.html I have heard great reviews on the oakton's. They are a bit pricy. I had a milwakee ph600 and never worked very well.

Thanks, everyone.
I just tested my water and it's under 200 ppm. I don't need a filter. Also, I finally got good pH tester. I just found out what's screwing up my plants. I had some old test strips that used to work alright. But, they don't anymore. They test my water at 6.5. The new meter I just bought says 7.5!!
So, is my memory accurate? Doesn't alkali water cause irreversible root damage?
If so, I'm gonna clone everything and start over.

I don't know about that, Michael. ask Toke.Or Hatch, or Die or Nim or roseman....they will know! (sorry, couldn't resist!!)
I know in soil, just correct the problem and you are fine. If the plants are alive and not looking too bad, you should be okay, but I don't know squat about hydro!
Peace

Depends on what you need. But, you can't beat large tupperware-type stuff from walmart.
10 - approx 80 gallons. Some of them are larger than a 55 gallon aquarium.
If you just want generic plant pots, hit up your local nursery. They usually give the 1-gal ones away and charge a quarter or so for larger ones.

I like cheapo meters for ph and tds, I get the cheap ones off ebay and keep a liquid ph test kit and some calibration solutions around to make sure they are calibrated correctly. I have had the same ones now for better then 2 years and no problems yet.
As for a RO unit i find that a MR. clean magis carwash works well for most smaller ops and gets me to 3ppm from tap thats 350+. Even my bottled RO tested out at 7 ppm and the carwsh will only set ya back 20 bucks. I attempted to mod one once to operate on a float switch once to keep a res full but it was a twisted mess of hoseclamps that still leaked and i lost intrest. I'm sure it could be done i just got lazy. It works great it's just a little slow if you need alot of water all at once.
Not sure what you mean by "grow tubs" I use large mortar mixing tubs from home depot as runoff trays for soil and as flood tables in hydro. They are about 3'x4' and made from thick black plastic. Cost less then 12$ and work great for me.
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other needs as i like to think of myself as a specialist in getting things done on the cheap. BTW if you need cheap ventilation check out Stanley 3 speed blower, currently 45$ at walmart but always drops to 25-35$ in the fall.

On reverse osmosis SpectraPure comes pretty highly recommended from a lot of people.
I'm not sure what this company sells but it is highly recommended for calling and talking to the owner and getting you what you want and at a decent price, many good reviews. Just call and talk to him, he'll take the time to help figure out what you need. Buckeye Field Supply, Ltd.
If you only need 3 gallons at a time you can get an under the sink model. They come with everything you need for around $150. They just process water slow, Might take 12 hours to get the 3 gallons made but if you aren't in a hurry they are sold everywhere.
