Rep Power: 0 | | My Miracle Grow Confession
I had been using a basic organic soil (hyponex, perlite, etc), for quite some time. Less expensive than the "fancy" soil mixes sold online and in shops. However, a while back, our Wal Mart didn't have any hyponex on hand when I needed to do some transplanting.
I went home, wondering what I was going to do. I always have a bag or 2 of MG, for my houseplants. I used some, thinking that as long as I don't add anything to it, my girls will survive until I can get some "good" soil. I have since purchased several more bags. At about $10 per 2 cubic feet, the price is about the same as my "cheap" organic mix. By the time I mixed up the hyponex, perlite, bone meal, lime, etc., the cost turns out to be about the same.
I did a grow, several years ago, using MG, and experienced some bad results. My fault. It is clearly stated "feeds for up to 3 months". I didn't heed this blatant warning. I fed them and they suffered miserably. I didn't know anything about pH and nutrient lock-out. I now add a couple of tablespoonfuls of hydrated lime, maybe a little perlite. That's it. I don't fertilize until they are well into flower and begin asking for it.
I'm sure the purist's among us will be agast, at my sacreligiousness.
Here are some pics of my Cluster Bomb. I still have to top them and start some clones.

I have been using the MG soil for my ladies for Veg and even a lil into flowering and the have not had a prob. I would not feel very comfortable going deep into flower w/ the slow release...I just feel that when the plant wants its food it needs to be there and let the plant determine the amount to uptake not the soil doing it for it. When I need a surefire safe soil for anything I grow I will always have a bag of MG around. Just my thoughts. | | The Following 4 Users Say Thank You to RadioJock420 For This Useful Post: | |

Right on Pappy. There is not one thing wrong with using the MG soil or the fertilizers. Those little ones look very, very nice.

I have used MG in soil grows quite a few times in soil grows and have not had any problems. People always tell you not to use it and I have no idea why, it's available almost anywhere, it's also affordable and easy to use. You just have to make sure that you flush the soil with water periodically to elliminate any salt buildup and flush real good two weeks before harvest to get rid of the chemical taste.

I have found that leaching is unnecessary when they get just water and molasses for the last week or two. The main thing I do, is mix in some lime to the tub when I dump in a bag. When peat moss breaks down, it lowers the soil's pH. The lime works as a good buffer.

Wow, Pappy! I couldn't grow anything in straight MG soil...I mixed it with generic soil and perlite and it did well. I probably did overfeed mine in flower hence the problems. But, also, when I did remove the soil from the plants, that were about to burn up...the fert balls seem to be killing the roots when they finally bust. You obviously have it figured out...which is good since it is so avaliable year round.
They look like they are going to be good producers for you. I am excited to see the results.
Peace.

your little cluster bombs look great, very healthy, how long before they go into flower? and how old are they now?
I think I have one out of my super mix pack. You will love the smell once they are budding up. Mine is a very sweetish smell. Can't wait to see them in about 5 weeks. Please keep us posted on there progress.

Those do look pretty damn good, nice and healthy green leaves. I started out with MG as well and made the same mistake in adding nutes too early. But yes, if done right, MG can be just as good as other soil mixes.
Looking great! Here's to a good harvest!

The ONLY problem I've had, is when I add stuff they don't ask for.

This is what i experienced. This is my first go and i have some MG perlite in some Happy Frog....i washed off the perlite to get some of the ferts out but watered my newly adopted clones as soon as i got the babies with fish emulsion and superthrive....im gessing i should have waited a little because my lower leaf on 2 of my plants are developing yellow towards the tips.
I going to feed straight water for a week/week and half then introduce the fish emulsion and next superthrive or vice versa.
My spots could have been due to heat issues because fan broke down in action it was around 90 degrees now i have it at 80

I should mention my feeding. I have been using Fox Farms OpenSesame, BeastieBloomz, and ChaChing. One tablespoon mixed with one gallon of water. Then, one cup of this solution mixed with one gallon of water. Feed every time I water. It keeps me from over-fertilizing. I sometimes add more than one cup of solution, if I think they need it. Since I have been doing it this way, I haven't had any nute burn.

So you pre-mix your ferts and use it as you need it? No problems with the nutes breaking down or fermenting I assume.....hmmmm
I guess those are chemical verus organic source nutes. Otherwise I think they would ferment on you.
Peace

Peace | I haven't had any adverse effects from doing it this way. A gallon of solution only lasts about 2 weeks or so, anyway. My molasses mix, on the other hand, could be used for CO2 generation. Every time I open the jug, the CO2 escapes with a poof.

Here is what the Cluster Bomb looks like at day 34 of 12/12
They were transplanted from 3 gal bags to 5 gal bags, today. And, they had to have a stake added for support. They wouldn't have made it much longer, trying to hold up the colas. I'm getting kind of giddy, working with them.
