Yes If the light is the same watts as the ballest. If you have a hps sceurity light in one unit yes.you can build your light and make it a remote ballest. The same with MH. what ever the watts of the unit is that's what watt lamp you want to use.If it's a 250 watt lamp you only run it with a 250 watt ballest.HPS has to have a HPS ballest and the same for MH.Dose that help? Peace

Yes they do,If it's a Murcury Vapor or High Pressure Sodium(HPS)
But you can disassemble the fixture and separate the componants.
Buy remote locating of the ballast you can place it outside the grow area to reduce heatload in the grow space.

Hope this helps

Peace

hey Y420, I built my own light by purchasing the items at an electrical place. I bought the ballast igniter and capacitor at the electrical place and then bought a buld at the home depot place. I put a light in for less than 100 dollars. I made my own reflector using flashing you can buy at the home store too. You can use and old extension cord to do the wiring for power. Hope this helps ya. I am totally DIY grow cabinet that I have less than 200 dollars in. I only had to buy a large enough exhaust fan to pull the air out, I had a bunch of pc fans that move air on the inside of the cab and have one rigged to blow across the light towards the exhaust.

'Hope this helps some.
