Default Crafting a Pipestone Pipe

I drove to Pipestone, MN yesterday to find a piece of pipestone. The pics are of the one piece I will use to craft at least 2 pipes. I am planning on making 1 traditional "peace pipe" and 1 pipe for enjoying the sacred herb.

This is the piece with which I will begin: I will update the thread as I progress with it's formation into a pipe.

Pappy,

Thanks my friend...this is going to be a fun tutorial to follow along with, for sure...!

Ok if I ask a bunch of questions? (I hope..LOL!) Could you tell me what makes a a piece good or bad for carving purposes? Can we buy carving grade pipestone off the web anywhere?

Do a google search. I found one the other day. The site I found sell it for $15 per pound. The man I bought this from said it was $10 per pound. He weighed it at 4.25 lb. But, then he said to make out the check for $30.

To see if it is good for making a pipe, wet it with a damp sponge to check for cracks.

Pappy,

I found this quote on an eBay auction of all places, but I sure like what it has to say, and how it says it...

"(The Sacred Pipe) is the most mysterious thing in the world. The Scepters of our Kings are not as much respected: for the Peoples (sic) have such a Deference for this pipe, that one may call it the God of Peace and War, and the Arbiter of Life and Death."
Father Marquette

In my own family history I've been told that my peoples were from the midwest and southwest US, and there is some discussion of whether or not my great grandfater was Cherokee or of an Apache tribe of northern New Mexico. All my life I have felt a closeness with native peoples, and have a special soft spot for beauty of the SW deserts.

Here is a pipe that my mother-in-law received from her co-workers, when she moved from Pipestone, MN. My plan is to make one that looks more like an upsidedown "T".

Looks like a traditional indian "peace pipe".

I am really interested in the mason aspect of milling the stone into a pipe.

If I can stay away from this keyboard long enough, I'll get around to making it and documenting it. Looks like I'm only going to get one decent pipe out of the stone I have.

It was made by native american (Sioux), in Pipestone, MN.
