Default cheap DC powersupply...

I was looking for a DC power supply today and had a brain storm....why not use an old computer power supply(PW)? hmmmm....one problem, modern PS's use the ATX standard which requires a motherboard and a switch to turn on the power supply....not a problem...the green wire on the largest connector is the signal wire....ground it and she'll turn on....and there you go....even if you go to a local computer store and buy a used PS like i did today they normally go for 5-10 bukz....thats alot better than 50+ on one from radio shack....the wiring for the one i bought today is as follows, but always check with a voltmeter before wiring any devices....

Green - Power Signal (Ground to Black = ON)
Red - 5v
Orange - 3v
Yellow - 12v

Black - Ground

Good idea!

I do much the same, except I go to thrift stores and dig through the boxes of old ac/dc transformers they usually have. Just be sure to get one that handles the amps of the fan or unit you want to run, add 2 wires and a couple wire nuts and you're good to go.

I use a couple like that in my dry closet...$.99 ea. at Value Village..

regarding amp rating, I find that most all modern PS's offer 5 to 25 amps on the 12v wires, but read the sticker on the PS for the info on your particular unit

Also, I got a pc fan from the Restore. I know a friend of mine in Texas has one near her so I assume just like here they are all over. In your phone book, look up Habitat for Humanity - Restore - and see what you find. I bought flourescent tubes, wiring, fans, and lots of other things from there. We go all the time. MANY things for your home and grow. T-8 flouros 3 bucks, sometimes you can even find T-5's. I have bought 2 sets of flourescents new, I have 8 in total, and they only cost me a couple of bucks each, aside from my big t-5 that I bought new.

Also look under "salvage" in your phone book. Many different places that deal with the public. It is worth a check folks. It truely is.
