Cole Puffinburger was taken Wednesday morning by two men who indicated they were police. The men tied up Cole's mother and her boyfriend, and ransacked the house before leaving with the boy.
On Saturday, police said they think the men are Mexican drug dealers and the abduction was a "message" to Cole's grandfather, Clemens Tinnemeyer, 51.
Tinnemeyer may have stolen millions of dollars from the Mexicans, Las Vegas police spokesman Cris Johnson said.
Johnson didn't say whether Tinnemeyer was involved with drugs, but police suspect methamphetamine is involved.
"Money is a huge factor, obviously. Drugs are a huge factor," he said. "The only innocent person involved in this entire operation is the boy."
Police arrested Tinnemeyer in California on Friday. "Clemens Tinnemeyer has been interviewed, information is still forthcoming in this investigation," Las Vegas police Capt. Vincent Cannito said Saturday.
They are looking for a Mexican man, Jesus Gastelum, and another, unidentified, person.
Police issued an Amber Alert for Cole on Wednesday, but called it off Saturday because it "had run its course," Cannito said.
Police got a number of search warrants as a result of the investigation, and found a large amount of cash, but Cannito didn't say where.
The search for Cole is continuing.
