Default Jamaica May Legalise Marijuana

Rastafarians Rejoice: Jamaica May Legalise Marijuana

Jamaica: Deputy prime minister Kenneth Baugh has announced that the possibility of relaxing drug laws is being considered. Police complain that marijuana-related offences are tying up valuable court time and jail cells.
In 2003 a proposal to legalise small quantities for personal use was scrapped for fear of economic sanctions from the US. Legalisation would be warmly welcomed by Rastafarians who smoke marijuana for religious reasons.
"We are happy to know this has not been forgotten. It would release the police from the bind of an unjust and an unenforceable law," said Paul Burke, president of Jamaica's National Alliance for the Legalisation of Ganja.

w00t w00t! good for them, man, it's definitely gonna boost their economy via tourism and....other means. plus with whats going on in amsterdam and what not with their laws changing, this could make Jamaica the new premier stoner destination. and they are so much closer.........awesome!

Not to mention, so much warmer. At least compared to the midwest.

they are heavily cracking down on the coffee shops, in the early 90's you could buy a good oz legal for a reasonable price, now its down to 5 grams a day with a tag of 10-30 euro a gram - which isn't close to reasonable. also they can't open any new shops since '97 and the old shops die like flies due to bylaws in dutch cities. in general has the once open society of Holland suffered a land slight into the neoconservative corner in the past 20 years wit all the problems this can bring: war on drugs, stagnation of society as well as economy, and tonnes of entanglements with the hawks from DC.

the Jamaica, i don't want to be a spoiler but this one is bouncing thru their parliament each and every year for past 20 years or so and always been killed with as single word from DC: Embargo - have it our way [DC] or be our new Cuba. Only time can tell if they sovereign enough this year to pull it thru as it would be a great thing for Jamaica. their legal system isn't in a too good shape and ending prohibition would free the needed source over night and it would end the power of organized crime in Jamaica which is a factor there right now due to Jamaica's struggling economy - the boost this would give for the tourism industry is questionable in terms of use for Jamaicans as it is 100% in foreign hands today, it would spin off some service jobs but most of the money won't stick on the island right now. But at least it would keep peaceful Rastas out of jail, which is already a good thing to do.

If they did legalize MJ, our government would most likely impose drug testing to re-enter the U.S. They are willing to do anything to protect "legal", dangerous drugs and the corporations that produce them. I was surprised to get a "tax rebate" check, because the government said I would receive one. I don't believe ANYTHING the U.S. government says. We have some very intelligent individuals here, but as a group, the citizens of this country are STUPID!!!! And, you can't fix STUPID.

that is probably what will happen once they end prohibition - if you enter the states via a flight from from Amsterdam and if just for a stop there, they almost strip search you - despite that the Netherlands are cranking up their stupidity and firing up the war on drugs on their turf as well.
