Kyllo v. United States, 533 U.S. 27 (2001), held that the use of a thermal imaging device from a public vantage point to monitor the radiation of heat from a person's home was a "search" within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment, and thus required a warrant. Because the police in this case did not have a warrant, the Court reversed Kyllo's conviction for growing marijuana.

Hi all i have a question on this , say you are venting a 1000 watt hps ,straight outside your home , like a dryer vent , if a helicopter is over the area searching for 'someone'who has just commited a crime and they have there thermol image on , will the air be just flying out pure red/orange in to sky ? just one long beam of hot air in the sky leading straight to your outlet vent on your home ?

a buddy of mine took a temp of a cloths dryer running on hi heat. and then the of light heat discharge not much difference (also a 1000 watt HPS)

dude, smart money's on not even venting outside. Why take the chance. Get creative and find a way to use that extra heat to lower other bills

I take all reasonable precautions with my grow, but that's where I stop the worrying. As a legal MMJ user in my state I have an "affirmative" defense available, and I stay within the guidelines for MMJ patients in this state. Meaning, no more than 15 plants or 24 oz. of bud on-hand at any time.

As for all you worried about the power usage, the power companies usually figure about 1kw per room in the home, so if it's an average 3 bedroom house figure you can run 3000W (total, including house appliances, etc.) without much hassle.

I run my flower lights (1000W) in the daytime/evening, as that way there isn't some big heat-bloom for them to see at night. The DEA helocopters use the airport about 1/2 mile from my house, and they always take-off and go right OVER my house...usually at less than 500 ft. ..LOL

Said this before...I'm reasonably cautious, but I will not live in fear. Life's just too damn short.

I personally vent my exhaust fan into a hall closet (the closet I grow in shares a wall with it). It is quiet, and nobody asks why the closet is warm.

flir to be used in fly overs to spot marijuana grows is illegal though they can use it at night to "help" see if they see an unusual sig "such as heat being vented through one pipe, they will then let ground crews know and you will be investigated, you should be fine seeing as you are in a basement and its vented throughout the house, this should not cause any unusual reading.
