California Family Accused of Making Bombs at Pot Farm Doubling as Day Care Center

Explosives and a marijuana farm were discovered at a Southern California home doubling as a state-licensed child day care center after a man blew off four of his fingers while mixing homemade explosives, authorities said Thursday.

Benjamin Kuzelka, 23, remained hospitalized at Loma Linda Medical Center and will be arrested when he his discharged, said sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez. His mother, Rebecca Kuzelka, 55, and brother, Greg Kuzelka, 21, were booked Thursday on suspicion of manufacturing illegal explosives, illegal growing of marijuana and child endangerment, he said.
Authorities went to Kuzelka Family Day Care after a local hospital reported late Wednesday that Kuzelka walked in and said he had shot himself in the hand. Doctors, however, became suspicious because the wound was inconsistent with a gun shot injury and they called authorities, Gutierrez said.
Investigators found explosives, a sophisticated marijuana-growing facility and evidence that the home had been used as a state-licensed child care facility as recently as the day before, Gutierrez said. The home is on a cul-de-sac in a remote area of Riverside County about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
"We do believe that when all this illegal activity was going on, that children were present," he said. However, no children were home at the time of the explosion, authorities said.

The explosives were hidden outside and detectives believe Grey Kuzelka moved them from the garage to the backyard while his brother was seeking medical treatment, said sheriff's Sgt. Pat Chavez.
A hazardous device team responded to the scene and defused explosives Thursday in several controlled blasts throughout the day. They left the scene by the late afternoon, Gutierrez said.
The FBI, which is also investigating, said there was no immediate indication that the case was linked to any terrorist investigation or any threat to public safety.
FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller referred all other questions to Gutierrez, who said he did not know what types of explosives were found at the site or how powerful they were.
Grey Kuzelka had been arrested on Saturday for investigation of possessing marijuana and concentrated cannabis, and was released the next day on $5,000 bail. Riverside County court records show Benjamin Kuzelka has a string of convictions for drunken driving and drug possession dating back several years.
A child care advocate with the state's community licensing division, which awards day care licenses, did not immediately respond to an e-mail or phone message seeking comment.
The facility was licensed for children ages 2 to 5 and was approved for no more than eight children at a time, Chavez said.

What a knuckle-head!

You'd think he could have come up with a better excuse then a gun shot. Physicians have to call the police when confronted with a gun shot wound.

ALLs I can say is, That is pretty darn scarry, All of those kids, how easy is it to get a daycare license, were was the parents...Didn't someone have a clue

No kidding... he could have just said he was playing with fire works or something... I accidentally shot a guy with a bb gun in high school and they called the cops cause it was a "gun"

What I find more concerning is that these people give all of us a bad name. The public will start to equate growing marijuana with explosives and guns, then having kids around on top of that, holy crap batman. Its sad that some people can be so irresponsible. If you choose to grow and indulge in the herb than you surely should know the limits of the law and try to remain as legal as possible under any situation.

You certainly have that right, Op1! And who is to say the rest of the family knew what he was up to, for god sake? I am sure if I knew a kid of mine was messing with this stuff they would be hitting the road, face first! Fast!

Yes sir... If I found out a daycare that my kids were at was doing something like that they had better pray the cops get there before me. Missing fingers would be the least of his problems.

It never ceases to amaze me at how idiotic some people are...Great job on that hand buddy

Atleast he blew himself up and no kids got hurt.

I agree with Op1...If my kids where at that day care...the cops would be the least of their worries...Chainsaw...nuff said

Daycare centers are a dangerous place. Even if the owners are good people they always have one relative that is basket case, we all do. It only takes one idiot to screw up a legal business. What's funny is the double standard when it comes to pot. When a car dealership owner gets caught doing a coke deal people don't associate car lots with cocaine. If an Asian restaurant owner makes a bomb in his carry out people don't blame Chinese food! We have to remember that we're fighting 90 years of powerful propaganda. People won't change their minds about marijuana overnight.

Where I live, Its "Illegal To Make or Set Off "Custom Made Fireworks"

I have to drive 45 mins south to the next state "That Does Legally Allow Us To Do Fireworks shows" You out to see 20 or 50 grown men & women, sitting in a old sand pit, BBQing all weekend, & everyone trying to "Out Do The Next Guy In Their Airial Fireworks" I have everything I need to make the fireworks, B.ut I sure as hell don't mix & make them "At Home" "Where Kids Are At", In a state that doesnt allow them?

The chemicals "Unmixed Are 100% Legal Here & In Just about every state in the US. But I suspect that the chemicals will be illegal in Cali.?

When I hit The State of NH Thats the "ONLY TIME" when I start mixing the chemicals & packing the mortor rounds.

It only becomes a Legal Crime "IF" I stupidly Set some off up here!

And I don't Do "Stupid Things" I Gave up doing stupid things when I was about 28 years old,

Making your own fireworks is illegal where I'm at too... federally I think (manufacturing and detonating an explosive devise). I was just saying that this idiot picked the one thing that got the cops called on him, he could have claimed to got his hand caught in the garbage disposal, or the mower, or a cat ate his fingers off while he was passed out drunk, anything besides "they got shot off". Screw that moron anyway... should have blown off his other digit as far as I'm concerned, you know, the one that only sticks up when your a special kind of happy.

Some guys I worked with were pyromanics. That's what they called themselves.

One guy drove all over the country to see good aerial shows. Another blew his house up making firecrackers in his basement. These were normal people in other ways, they just enjoyed firecrackers and fireworks. The kids were 21 or so. Yes, they did something dumb, and mom should have been aware of what they were up to, but chances are just as great they were making large firecrackers at the wrong place. JMHO, Tex
