Rep Power: 115 | | member proposal: profile upgrades? a few days ago, i signed up to myspace. that turned out to be quite a waste of time. while appreciating the concept of a personal profile/webpage, it occurred to me that i really didnt have an interest in the "social" aspect of it. so it is not for me, and i have abandoned it altogether.
then, considering that the time that i spend on the web is now mostly spent at greenpassion(NOT a waste of time), i realized that if the profile features of myspace were added to the current member's profile page, it would enhance it quite a bit, and improve the site and its experience immensely. i think it would also add to member retention, not that there is a problem there to begin with. every little bit helps, though.
so, what do you think? i believe there will be positive feedback.
one member has expressed a similar interest, i believe, though i may be mistaken.

I'm not sure what you mean, sprocket. You have a customizable profile page here: http://www.greenpassion.org/members/sprocket/
If you're talking about trying to come up with a myspace style of personal pages and profiles, I don't think that's realistic. Something like that would take a thousand hours to even get started.

It would be a pretty sweet feature. You could just then tell everyone to look at your profile and they could go through a photo album, grow logs things of that nature.

Your last five albums are listed on your profile and you can customize it almost any way you want, including adding links to your grow journals, etc.
It's there. You just have to make use of it.

Rep Power: 115 | | again, i am very stoned. which is a good thing. i believe i need to clarify my actual meaning. i apologize, but i am very stoned at the moment and truthfully can not determine whether my wording was accurate or not.
i am referring to an enhanced layout.
perhaps a slide show of pics/ albums, mp3/media player, and youtube video embedding capabilities such as are found in the forums. perhaps a "personal links" module for advanced activism networking between other pro-cannabis sites/groups.
i believe that roughly sums it up. i know that i frequent members profiles quite often, and feel that it would enhance a sort of intra-social network, so to speak.

Here's what it boils down to:
How are your PHP, AJAX and MySQL skills? Assuming you have awesome skills, which you could be using to make over $100k/year, do you have an extra three to six months to work for free?
That's what it would take.

i see. very well, it was simply a suggestion. i did not realize that those additions would be that intensive. i thought that perhaps vBulletin would have mods and such available.
on another note, i did not realize that field had such a pay rate! i am in the wrong profession.

Yeah, the really good PHP programmers make $10k/mo - easy. I know a few.
If I could stand doing it all day, every day, I would do it, myself. I'm good enough to earn half that much, probably. But, I couldn't do it full-time. It's mind-numbing.
By the way, here's my old site from when I thought I wanted to be a web programmer: http://intelligentwebdevelopment.com
(Just ignore those ugly old designs... that was before I really learned graphics.)

not bad Michael, simple and functional. i like it, though i agree the graphics could be improved a bit, but in truth it is not necessary.

Hi, Michael...you have any recommendations for reference material, outside of php.net, for a aspiring programmer? Maybe in book form? Quote:

Hmm... the only book I own on the subject is this one: Amazon.com: Learning PHP 5 (0636920005605): David Sklar: Books
It's pretty good, if you have some idea what you are doing with the basics.
After you get going, the only thing you really need are the PHP manual, forums and blogs.
I'll see if I can dig up some e-books for ya somewhere.

Thanks, I imagine just about anything from O'reilly would be pretty good. I think I had a Javascript book from them years ago. I was looking at the book that covered PHP and MySQL...but I probably should stick with the basics for now. Get my server up and running, so I can fiddle with the basics.

I have a server and a spare domain you can play with, if you want.
Actually, as odd as it may sound, you are best off learning PHP and MySQL together, as a combined whole. Almost everything you do and everything you ever work on will be MySQL-driven. So, go for them both, at once. My first book was an e-book which covered both subjects. I lost it years ago, of course, and it's obsolete now, anyway. But, that's where I started.

Thanks for the offer...I got a Linux system here collecting dust that I feel I need to do something with, maybe get the LAMP stack going on. I imagine that would be some good experience for me too. Seems to be a demand for these skills here locally, but like you said programming can be mind numbing. I think that was why I dropped out of it back in the 90's, It might have been the whiskey, I don't remember exactly...

I learned COBOL in '73, thanks to Uncle Sam. But, I never worked in that MOS. They kept me in school for almost a year, learning electronics.
I couldn't program anything now, to save my soul. Can barely remember any electonic theory, either.

Between FaceBook, and now GP, I already spend too much time on the computer. I probably wouldn't want to enter another chatty-type social networking deal...
That being said, if that's what this site becomes, I'll most likely be here!
