Lightbulb lets keep our green passion green friendly

Ok folks this seemed like the best place to talk about this. here goes
I used to keep reef aquariums. Some reef keepers use MH lamps to light them. I used cfl's .In an reef magazine there was an article that got me thinking about some stuff. Now by using HID lighting are we taxing the electrical grid and there causing more coal to be burned for the electricity needed?(causing green house gas and acid rain) So I am asking you if you have a large light going what are you doing to offset that use? Are you using heavy draw appliances at night? are you running your lights at night when it is not peak usage time if possible . Have you converted as many regular household lights to CFL as practical ? Just trying to get people to think green as they are growing. Not trying to blast anyone for there practices. Are you a home owner? Why not a skylight to supplement your electric light. ( it would be hard to explain a skylight in the closet but not the garage) This may pay for itself in your electric bill and the resale value of your home. And the sun is free!!!

What do you do with your waste nute solution does it go down your drain? do you use it in your veg garden . Do you just spray it on your grass to green that up? Please reuse or dispose of it in a green fashion. Common sense folks please.

Gorilla growers are you treading lightly on public lands? Are you growing in a manor that nature can reverse in a year? Do you try to leave your grow sites as close to they were when you planted when you are done? I have never known anyone that grows like this and again not pointing a finger just want yall to keep this stuff in mind as your gardens get you closer to nature.

I am by no means a hippie or a tree hugger but some common sense will keep the anti marijuana folk from pointing fingers how we are eco-unfriendly and use resources and destroy natures balance.

I am going to go burn some tires now to increase my carbon footprint.

Actually I am very glad you brought this up. I agree with you completely.

I would like to copy and post this from scribbles:

I can not stress this enough and I'm sure I have tons of back on this statement. DO NOT USE HARMFUL/LETHAL DEVICES TO SECURE YOUR PLOT!! You know how the cops look at that? "These marijuana growers use bear traps, sawed off shotguns with tripwires, etc to protect their crop" That looks really bad on the cannabis community. Don't do it. There's a thing called camouflage. Use the native brush to your ability. I am aware that cannabis doesn't blend in with 90% of forests. Sh*t happens. I've heard of people use infrared systems that take pictures and/or start recording video when an object of particular size/temperature enters the vicinity. It won't help too much theft-wise but you can see if there's cops scoping your plot so you know just to lay low and forget about it, its gone. Some people use alarms connected to tripwires. These cause great amounts of attention but if you set them low enough to scare the person, they'll run. But please follow the Golden Outdoor Rule. Be creative and be safe.

A man after my own heart...u can bet all my nutes runoff goes in the garden or on the hedges. I even keep my hot water heater off until 30 minutes before use.lol I run some pretty big power but it's at night and I use the heat the fans pull off of the cool tubes to heat the attic of the house during winter months. U can save alot of $ and make your grow work for u in more ways than just your meds.

some thing i do to keep my green green, is
1. i am carbon offesting - basically paying a company to plant trees equal to the carbon i produce.
2. grow organically any waste water goes into my garden,
3. i am looknig at solar panels to power my fans, pumps and junk and reduce my over all power consumption.
4. i only use recycled materails for my grow, ( indoors that is)
and finally i grow mostly outdoors.

Use cold water only for laundry
Line dry as much as possible
Start a compost pile
Put a grey box on your water heater. That is basically just a timer.

AWESOME! I was wondering about this type of offsetting because I am on "old Hippie" and believe our earth is being totally stressed!
1) All our nute water goes into the flowers and outside garden.
2) Our lights are mainly at night when its cold and the heat produced heats some of the house.
3) We bundle up with long johns and such instead of running heat 24/7.
4) Wequit smoking cigaretts with filters.
5)We take no unnecessary trips in the car.
6) I plant trees and flowers and veggies for whomever and whenever I can.
7) I do as much as I can to help my neighbors recycle instead of BUY, BUY, BUY things brand new. Every piece of clothing (except undies) are bought used as is most of our furniture & appliances.

I know this sounds kinda like I'm tooting my own horn But I do believe this mind set is what this country needs more of. Thanks for having this kind of thread here.

I practice most of these. I raised two kids on home made baby food, usually from our garden, and we also raised our own chickens and cows. Cloth diapers, dried in the sun sanitizes them. flowering is at night. All excess water is used on other plants. Soil that is used from flowering plants is placed on my lawn to help the soil. Also trying to make an eco friendly lawn, not just green rye grass but wildflowers and other field cover is used. Never use chemical fertilizors, bug repellents, or weed killers. Composting is done always. All water comes from our well. Never use bleach if I can help it. Kills natural bacteria needed to break down septic tanks contents. Also use eco friendly cleaners such as baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and my favorite, pinesol. pinesol does not hurt pets or other things. Dirty water from floor washing is dumped on areas with weeds. It does kill them eventually. And does not harm environment.

And what is wrong being a hippie? Aiy ya hippie, Flamingoe? LOL!

Peace

When I was (much) younger I had a little kid throw his yo-yo at me and call me "a dirty hippie" I told him I wasn't dirty, that in fact I love water and I kept his yo-yo.
Nothing wrong with being a hippie, just sometimes I am soo fervent about an issue (green, violence, stupid govt stuff...) that I'm more of a radical. We were raised 1/2 on self sufficient farm & 1/2 in the city- but we always had a big garden & rabbits etc.
We are starting the process of getting & raising our own chickens, ducks, sheep &/or goats. We live rural/city now on a little more than 1/2 acre. Our goal is: a total self sufficient mini farm w/about 3 +/- acres by 2011 or sooner or whenever we can make it work.

I'd like to see people add to A list, different things we can do, just to help us all think green in everything. Things that could help... I never thought of a timer for the water heater...cool idea.

Bricks in the back of the toilet displace water.
Don't flush every time.
Wood burning fireplace instead of central heat & air.
During the summer when it's really hot I spend hours in a kiddiepool instead of indoors with ch&a.
I haven't watched tv in almost 5 years.
I don't buy cable. (I will never pay for tv!!!!!)
I'm actively telling others too, especially kids.
Oh yea, & grey water lines from washer & shower & sinks to different parts of the yard.
No dishwasher, dryer when it rainy & heat comes into house.
Burn my & neighbors paper trash instead of sending it to landfill.
No cell phones.
Roll our own cigs.
Bake my own sweets...I think I'll go make a cake.

For me, it's more like I can only remember a little (I wonder why) of the 60's and 70's, but I do remember the hoses from the tubs out the windows for the gardens. Unfortunately, I got too comfortable & it was just easier to forget about conserving.

I'm an ole hippie & I know just what to do.....
